- SIDELIGHTS 0 CONVENTION (Continued from Page One.) the unterrified Democracy. The latest G. G. P. arrival of prominence is former Representative Phil Camp- bell of Kansas. Mr. Campbell was at one time chairman of the all- powerful. rules committee in the House of Representatives. At the Cleveland convention, which was s0 Jambasted by Keynoter Harrison, Mr. Campbell was chief parliamentarian. He was glways at the front of the platform, ready to “parliament,” but the convention was so well organized that no question arose and the abill- ties of the well-known Kansan were not called into play. ‘The “Senatorial oligarchy” of which former Governor Cox used to complain in the last election is catching it hot and heavy in this con- vention. The “oligarchy” had reach- ed its height in 1920 when it dictated the nomination of Warren Harding and wrote the party platform. It met its Waterloo at Cleveland. The Democrats can't say much worse things about some of the Republi- ¢an senators than were said and thought at Cleveland by the friends of President Coolidge. Pat Harrison presided with so much pep ané perspicacity while acting as temporary chairman that many of the delegates wished he bad been selected for the permanent post. Pat put things through with a rush that called forth smiles and cheers from the perspiring delegates. Madison Square Garden has a glass roof and the “daylight saving” sun shines through it with all t! vim and vigor of mid-July rather than late June, ‘Hot houses have glass roofs ao the reader may draw his own conclusion as to the tempera- tures in the convention hall when things get to going right. These Democrats always draw hot weather and, best of all, they love it. . It didn't take ‘em ten minutes to “shuck" their coats and make a shirt sleve affair out of it. The southern delegates were spots of coolness in their linen and duck sults. p< Whoever selected Miss Anna Case as convention soloist certainly got a quick and appreciative vote of thanks from the delegates and gal Jeries. Miss Case, who ts a Metro- politan Opera star, sang “The Star Spangled Banner” and the “Battle Hymn of the Republic” with a dra- matic fervor which swept the con- vention off its feet. Her voice rang clear and mellow above the chorus of ten thousand voices which joined her at her beckoning. Delegates who had not caught her name at first rose in their places and demanded that they be told again. Miss Case not only has a lovely voice, but is a lovely Indy and the delegates were loath to let her 0. The convention band occasionally gets its signals crossed. It had bet- ter watch its step when the favorite #on booms are being launched. Some hot-headed Southerner or hard-head ed westerner may take a shot at it if it perpetrates the wrong time. For instance, when Senator Pat Harri- fon, of Mississippi, was first intro- duced, the band ineptly played “Cali fornia, Here I Come.” Pat had no idea: of going to California for finy- thing or anybody. , Later, the band sent out a correction by bursting into “Dixie.” That helped some. ‘The sessions of a Democratic na tional convention always are late in assembling. The delegates don't seem to mind. It gives them an op- portunity to go visiting on the floor or to rally around their standards and sing the state songs, About the only state song everybody seems to know is “My Old Kentucky Home.” “In Dear Old Georgia’ generally gets a few volunteers from the out side, but “I-Oh-Wa, I-Oh, Wa TAAt's Where the Tall Corn Grows” gen- erally has to go it alone. “The Banks of the Wabash 1s still remembered by some of the olf timers, but the modern generation seems to have passed it by, Convention visitors and delegates fre as one in their praise of the New York cops. They are just getting ac quainted with the blue coats but before the convention is over they are bound to be good friends. New York cops are about the most cour: teous the country knows, especially to the Indies. They are also a fine looking body of men and their unt forms always are immaculate. Mayor Hylan told the delegates in his wel- coming speech he had passed the word along to the police te to them. The announ greeted with a great cheer. “How about the revenuers? One raucous voiced gentleman demanded Dut the mayor only smiled and evi dently he could not vouch for the Tlask-hunters who have invaded the metropolis. There are s0 many revenuers fround that the native New Yorkers are beginning to complain that some of thelr unfailing “sources of supply across the counter” are going dry They will be glad when the Demo. cratic show comes again over and business be. 8 usual,” Tn telling the delegates that New York i the fairest city in all the land, Ma Hylan always niikes one exception. He puts Wall street on the griddle and roasts it to a fare-you-well. He says Wall street is @ narrow Jane with a river at one nd and a grave yard at the other In between, he opines, here is crowd- ed more wickedness, more corrup tion, more “special Interest,” more embattled boodle than in any other quarter of the world, Some folks who have listened to the mayor are beginning to believe he took Hollins seriously when Hollins told him the Georgia d tion waa first for McAdo and sec for Hylan. The Republican conven tion at Cleveland was like a stately noclety function tn the severely drap ed drawing reom: The “Madison Square Garden convention is like al te ‘ , Slain 4 47.20 WHE BANK. a Nou Dor You ste Im GETTING THERE 1/70 Dovey in THE Tae Onis WHER THIS COLUMN HITS THE } Gane © WHAT IF THE BANK IS 1So MaRK - WATCH OUT ! If there were any Ku Kluxers among the customers when Cardinal Hays was delivering the invocation, they stood nobly on their feet and bowed their heads with the Catholic prelate. The cardinal stressed Toyal- ty to America more than once and also quoted the words of Lincoln— “with charity toward all\and malice toward none.” There was one man tn the open- ing audience whose eyes were tea: dimmed during the great demonstra- tion'for Woodrow Wilson.
