Hughes, Jr., 11, of Des Moines, Ia., doesn’t care a whoop about the wind- up of the Democratic Convention. It could all be over now, as far as he is concerned. For, he has received his appointment as official page, and has an engraved card to prove it. “And I have had my picture taken, just like a regular candidate,” he says triumphantly, “and all the kid back home will see it.” “Back home,” young John is a seventh-grade schoolbody, and a first-grade carrier of the Des Moines News after school hours. His father te sergeant-at-arms of the convention. But it should not be implied that he used his office to win the appointment for h The boy and his smile carried the issue. And here's his picture to prove it. JOHN J. HUGHES, JR. |Commodity Trade News (Copyright, 192 New Orleans---The rice crop of ‘Texas, Arkansas and Louisiana is in excellent condition, according to re- ports to the agricultural department. The market strong because sup- piles are the lightest in years, total- Ung on June 1 about 430,000 pockets of 100 pounds each, compared with 1,844,000 on August 1, 1923. Coal Denver—Total coal production in Colorado to June 1, was tons, an increase of 124,035 t 1923. Fish Seattle —Express shipments of halibut in iced cars from the north coast banks are heavy. The whole- male price of the fish here is 17 cents a pound, with demand good. Steel Youngstown — The Youngstown Stee] and Tube company ts rebulld- ing and enlarging its blast furnaces in the East Youngstown group. Farrell, Pa.—Stee] manufacturers report improved demand for pig iron bars, plates and shapes. Sheets and 4 Casper Tribune) pipes also are in better demand. Orders for carloads are coming in more frequently than heretofore and one maker predicts that district plants will be able to maintain an average of fifty per cent. Poultry Houston — Poultry prices have dropped here, owing to increas of re- ceipts. Prices for hens fell from 21 to 18 cents and fryers frorh 32 to 28 cents. Coal. Chicago—Altho two million five hundred thousand acres have been added to the planted corn belt in the middle west, retarded the crop that a yield under the three billion bushels of 1923 is indicated. Furniture Richmond, Va.—Alvin E. Dodd, manager of domestic distrubution for the chamber of commerce of the ‘United States, sald today the Amert- can people spend $971,000,000 an- nually for furniture. This is 4 per cent of what they pay for all com- modities, he said. Non-Metallic Minerals Are Abundant In State ‘The non-metallic minerals of Wyo- ming may become of immense im- portance to Wyoming, according to a statement issued by Albert B. Bartlett, state geologist, and pros- pectors and mining operators should search for these minerals as mar- ket conditions are now favorable. For example sillimanite and kyanite are in big demand for the manu- facture of spark plugs, only one commercial deposit, in California, having been developed at this time, though an occurence has been noted near Wheatland, Wyo., and will be further investigated. These min- erals are worth about $30 per ton; it {# important, however, to have deposits of sufficient size, purity and accessibility to guarantee continu- ous supplies of large tonnage of any of the mineras! to be marketed. Mica is used for a great many purposes and reserves in other parts cf the United States are being con- sumed to such an extent that our deposits will soon be called upon. Commercial deposits occur near Grand Encampment, from which a shipment has been made and others will follow; near Wheatland where ® loca! company is opening a dyke running high in mica of good qual- ity and electrical resistance, and near Sunrise where sheet mica of good size and quality can be ob- tained. Mica runs in value from $16 per ton to $4.50 per pound, according to quality. In the Coonfe Hills near Wheat- land {s a large deposit of garnet, from which a small shipment has been made. It is used for abrasives and has a value at shipping point of about $20 per ton. Wheatland may also become a producer of talc as a deposit of the best grade talc has been discovered near there. + Other minerals in demand are: Fuller's earth, diatomaceous earth, tripolite, magnesite, fluorspar, feld- spar, kaolinite, barite, zeolites, graphite, slates and others. Wyoming undoubtedly has these minerals, and the state geologist is planning to secure samples of them, and to be prepared to furnish in- formation as to the occurrence of these minerals in Wyoming. “Make slogan adopted by National Federation of Music Clubs requires co-operation if to the desired encouragement and we are to bring It fulfillment. We are getting encouragement but there is a lack of co-operation on the part of teachers, performers and directors te help bring Amert- can music before the public. The material is here, so it remains to familiarize American people with the works of their native compos- ers. This can only be accomplished by study and by hearing the com positions on eur concert and re- cital programa, cert programs given are made up of numbers by foreign composers. It is true that in the past we have had to depend on foreign material but surely with composers like Me- Dowell, Cadman, Sherwood, Mra. Hy H. A. Beach, Chadwick, Horatio Parker and numerous others of note we deserve ‘an equal share of any program. Coddling 1s no longer the chief need of the American composer, he i# strong enough now to profit by the discouragement of his evil ten- dencles, In other words the Ameri- can composer is ready for eritictsm. Until the present time tt has been inconceivable that the Americin should produce a native art. The race is more or less a mixture of foreign elements. It has been fre- quently mentioned that the negro folk music may be the right founda- tion for a strictly American school but the vital it ie in objection to that is no sense a national expression, not even a sectional ex pression. Indian music would be as reasonably chosen as the negro, The for a national spirit in Amert music Hes tn the development ality that gives us individaul- i the nations of the world the past few years America as made wonderful strides in the Music Reviews Nine tenths of con-| The ‘Natlonal Federation is doing a great deal to inspire American com- posers by the Biennial Prize com- petitions. To show that these com- petitions are successful—the last one registered the largest number of manuscripts yet submitted, It should be understood that it Is the aim of this department of the Fed. eration to award prizes only to those compositions which will be worthy additions to American Music Mterature. Large sums of money donated by different organizations are being given as prizes in these contests, showing that the people throughout America are support: ing a cause for future development. Another impetus to the cause of American Music is the movement’ to establish a national codservatory which, if established, will mean thi American students will have a place to receive instructions from the very fee. This will be one of the great- est achievements in American Musi. cal world. Every American should look at the present state of music in Amer- fea with pride and a greater hope for the future. So, let's begin right here at home to ‘Make. America Musteal."* ——— NEWS BRIEFS BALTIMORE, $4. vin Hartman, Jr., June 21,—Ir- nm of Irvin H. LONDON, June 21.—The news cor musical world.
