GREIGHTON HALE ADDS TO FAME IN “TRILBY” Creighton Hale, ulready of the most popular juveniles of the screen is said to add materially to his lau- rels in his interpretation of the role of “Little Billee,” the sensitive, aris- tocratic British art student and lover of Trilby, in Richard Walton Tull's magnizicent production of “Trilby,” a First National attraction, playing at the America theater Wed- nesday and Thursday. Producer Tully and Director James Young warmly congratulated themselves upon their selection of Hale for this importanf role. Among tests of a score of talented players considered in casting the role, his genius and his personality stood out in bold relfef. And his conception of the part and portrayal of it more than met their expectations. Which is not surpristii Hale, in spite of his years, is a veteran of the stage’ as well as of the screen. Amonf the most notable of his stage achievements {s a part with Lady Forbes-Robertson in ° “The Dawn of a Tomorrow;” with John Mason and Martha Hedman in “An Indian Summer,” -with Holbrook Blinn, Edmund Breese and Gareth Hughes in “Moloch.” His most re- cent stage appearance was in the leading role in “Just Suppose.” He will be remembered as the but- professor in ‘Way also in his support of Mae Murray in “Fascination”; and in his recent starring vehicle, “Her Majest: He is one of the extra large cast in “Tea With a Kick.” PICTURE AT (AIS 16 CENTERED UPON WOMEN The greatest epics of the stage and of literature have ever centered about the figure of a woman. Men may be of heroic mold and adve: turous of spirit, but woman exudes a spirit of romance, love and drama that has made her the favorite character of writers of all kinds. Thus in “Liles of the Field,” a First National picture which pl. today and Tuesday at the Iris thea- ter, we find the theme focused on the modern woman and the “deal” handed her by the world. Patient, long-suffering and meek, she is the particular victim of fate and is buf- feted about mercilessly. Loving, she is met with repulses and neglect. Forgiving, she is thrown aside. At last in pictures / Her nor yl pr cll dadyn Pictuite By JOHN B. FOSTER (Copyright 1924 Casper Tribune) NEW YORK, June 16.—Beginning Sunday, June 15, the limit rule re- stricting clubs to 25 players went into effect in the major leagues. “From that time on, the managers not only must keep their rosters at 25, but they must refrain from try- ing out new men unless the new men have been designated as among the 26 regulars. Many of the older and conserva- tive owners are of the opinion that the 25 rule should have been en forced from the start of the season: They believe a club has about as good a chance to win the pennant starting with 25 men or starting with 40 or so and then weelling down. Certainly, it would be more economical. And there fs little doubt that a championship could be won handily with an initial lst of 25 Were it not that most of the manag- ers are experimentally tnclined. It would be better for some mana- gers if they had less playérs. Then they would have to lay out their campaigns differently and probably would lose some fewer games trying to guess which catcher, which pitch- er and which infield to use. Fiddling around with a huge pitch- ing staff especially has cost more than one baseball club its chances for championship. Cincinnati will be hard hit by the thinning out process. The Yanks are bothered with lameness in their in- field. The Reds have been hit every- where except in the box and prob- ably they have been hit there, for their pitchers are not living up to expectations. Beth Boston teams are down to fighting trim and so are the Phili delphia teams. The Giants may re- duce thelr pitching staff. It is not necessary that a player should be put out in the cold world but it is necessary that the 25 men shall be known so that there will be no sub- stitutions when a manager thinks the other fellow isn't looking. If one or more of the 26 is injured, the manager may not draw upon his re- serve. He must fight it out until August’ 31, with the 25 players nam- ed Sunday. Whether Marquard will come around so that he will be able to pitch during the summer for Boston is a question. The strain of throw- ing may prove too great for the wound left by his appendicitis opera- tion. Felix, a Boston outfielder, and Batchelder, Boston pitcher, are both back in the gamo after similar operations.
