Nomination June PORTLAND, Maine, 16,— Maine voters went to the pools to- day to nominate Republican and Democratic candidates for governor, senators, fficers aid mem: bers of slature. Senator Bert M Republican, was opposed for re-nomination by for- mer Congressman Frank E. -Guern- sey and Louis A. Jack. Fulton J Redman was unopposed for the Democratic nomination for senator. ‘The only contest for a congregsional nomination was in the Second dis- trict, where» Congressman Wallace H, White, Jr., Republican, was op- posed -by Cyr Blanchard, while Bertrand McI and Albert W. Plummer sought the Democratic nomination. Frank G. Farrington and Ralph O. Brewster were the candidates for the Republican nomination for gov- ernor, with Willlam R. Pattangall unopposed for the Democratic nom!- nation. The Ki Klux Klan during the camps announced {ts sup- port of Brewster, who has sponsor- ed a proposed amendment to the state constitution forbidding use of state funds for sectarian high schools. Farrington, who is presi- dent of the state senate, opposed the amendment on the ground that it would prevent aid for many aca- demies which serve as free high schools. Slemp Decides to Keep His Position WASHINGTON, June 16.—C. Bas- com Slemp, secretary to President Coolidge, announced in a formal statement before leaving for Cin- cinnat!, that he had resigned bis present position and would continue actively associated in the Repud- lican national campaign. The formal statement was issued because of persistent reports of the liklihood of Mr. Slemp’s retirement owing to the open disagreement be- tween him and William M, Butler, the Coolidge campaign manager, during the convention last week at Cleveland. The disagreement between Mr. Slemp and others on the one hand, and Mr. Butler, Frank W. Stearns, and thelr supporters on the other, was generally noticeable after the adjournment of the convention, but President Coolldge, after hearing both sides, was able to bring about a reconciliation of views. ‘This statement was issued by Mr. Slemp: "I am leaving this afternoon for Cincinnati to be present at an op- eration to be performed on my cou- sin, P. W. Slemp, now in a hospital there. He js my chief dependence in my business affairs. I am taking Dr. Oden with me. I shall be away several days. The time of my re- turn is in a certain sense on ac- count of this, indefinite. “When I do return, I expect to be actively associated in the cam paign and in my present position, which I haye not resigned.
