PAGE EIGHT [Two Former Of Land Sho Interest in By EDNA MARSHALL right 1924 Casper Tribune) ‘ON, June 15.—The old saying “Like father, ike son” may be true—but not its com- panion piece. “Like husband, like wife.” That fact is strikingly exempliti- ed today by the attitude of two former first ladies of the land to- ward the national political conven: tions. ue Had Warren G Harding and ‘Woodrow Wilson lived there is little doubt that both of them would be today in the middle of the political stream. Mrs. Hard- ing and Mrs. Wilson’ are entirely out of it, spending thelr hours in the still waters of seclusion. Mrs. Harding was urgently in- vited to attend the Republican convention at Cleveland. But, des- pite the fact that she had gone to her old home at Marion, Ohio, for a rest and was within « few hours’ ride of the convention city, she did not even “drop in.” Should the leaders of the party keep her apprised as to the pro- gress of the convention? Yes, if they chose. They could reach her readily enough by tepehone or telegraph. And there the matter was allowed to rest. During her husband's life, Mrs. Harding was intensively interested in politics. Now, all the zest has gone out of it for her. It was a convention that proved Mr. Hard- ing’s death sentence. Woodrow Wilson, it (Cor WASHIN is under- First Ladies w But Little Conventions health and for which he died a martyr, But at the 8. street house, where he breathed his last, it was said that Mrs. Wilson “has made no plans to go to the convention— she has said it either Wa Mrs. Wilson fractured a small bone in her shoulder some weeks ago while visiting in Vir- ginia, But that fact has little, if anything, to do with her at- titude toward the convention. She has long been up and about her home and spent most of yesterday going over her mail with her secretary, R. W. Bolling. Interested? Oh, yes, she is in- terested. Her step-son-in-law, Wil- liam G. McAdoo, is one of the lead- ing contestants for the presidential nomination. That is enough to keep any woman interested. But she isn’t going to the convention. At least, not if the political wise- acres hereabouts know whereof they speak. Perhaps like Mrs. Harding, she will be apprised of the result by telephone or tel graph. She may even listen in a bit by raido, But the hilarity of & political convention is not for these women. Most women weep when they see a bride go to the altar. Per- haps these two may be excused if they shed a tear for the nominees. nothing about FORD DEALERS HOLDING MEET AT BOYLE COMPANY'S GARAGE The For Motor company in con- junction with the Hendrie & Bolt- hoff Manufacturing and Supply com- pany are holding a shop clinic at the shop of Earl C. The purpose of the clinic is to acquaint the dealers over the coun- try with the new approved methods and equipment for handling repair jobs on Ford products. Only ono thing is necessary to nunke it possible and that is to dig a tunnel twenty-two miles long under the English channel. Tunneling the channel between England and France has been talked about for forty years—in fact work was actually commenced forty years ago, but the project was abandoned for lack of finan- cial backing and because engineer. ing then was not equal to the job. Engineers say it would be a fairly simple job now, offering no more technical difficulties than a number of engineering feats that have been done in recent years. The tunnel would cost about 130,000,000, it is estimated, and perhaps ten years would be re: quired for its completion. Both in England and France there is serious talk these days of actually putting the thing through. McAtee enlisted in Company K of the Sixth regiment in January, 1862, In the fall of 1863 his brigade, 600 strong, had the mis- fortune to turn up at Neosho, Mo., simultaneously with General Joe Shelby, noted Missourl Con- federate cavalry leader, and 200 southerners. Shelby captured the 600 federal troops in a surprise attack, and then sat down to figure out how he would be able to hold them. Unable to depe cut how he could carry on with one man to guard three prisoners, Shelby sent therg home. “You Yankee officers tell your men to pack up thelr things and get back home and stay there until they are ordered to report again,” Shelby warned the cap- tive federal officers. McAtee went home. Months Passed and an order came to re- port. The war ended and the rival armies disbanded. In 1868, MeAtee, having received no dis- charge, applied to the War De partment, only to find that he was listed as a deserter Lieutenant William N.
