PAGE FOUR. “THE MARRIAGE. GHEAT” NEN AMERIGA. FEATURE Thomas H. Ince rented the palatial steam yacht “Sultdna,” at great expense, to provide authentic atmosphere for his intensely emo tional dramatic feature, ‘The Mar- riage Cheat,” a First National at- traction which starts at the America theater today. Aboard the yacht, out at sea, Lea trice Joy and Adolphe Menjou were filmed in a number of scenes that provide some of the biggest dra- matic moments of the picture. In the story, a gay party aboard the “Sultan develops a bitter quarrel between “Bob Canfield,” played by Menjou, and his bride, “Octavia,” enacted byy Miss Joy. This quarrel leads to An attempted suicide by ‘Octavia’ and her eventual fxolation on the romantic isle of Hii ti ‘There, with Paul Mayne, a missionary and the only white man on the island, she is drawn into the niost amazing ro mance ever unfolded. Thus, the developments aboard the yacht “Sultana” create an impor- tant crisis in the story, justifying. in Mr. Irice’s opinion, the difficulty and expense atteched to its acquis! tion. Throughout “The Marriage Cheat” the producer's strict policy of providing realistic and technically accurate backgrounds for his play: ers is strongly evident. > “GIRL SHY” OPENS AT RIALTO THEATER TODAY Bashfulness that bubbles over with laughter will arrive in town today when Harold Lloyd's latest feature Pathecomedy, “Girl Shy," opens at the Rialto theater, where it Will be shown until new Wednesday. Lioyd has hitherto given to the screen many humorous novelties in his varied characterizations, but tn “Girl Shy” he promises to outdo his previous laugh efforts with his por trayal of a very bashful small town boy, who made a secret study of girlé, and the more he studied them, the more he feared them. It is a really novel roler and should be full of fun, because Lloyd has by this time achieved a reputation for never disappointing his many followers. CHINESE AGT PLAYING AT COLUMBIA THEATER The most ‘artistic act at the Columbia theater this week is that of Ah San and Jo. The female member of this team is not only an accomplished dancer but is un- usually limber and executes some body bending stunts that approach contortionism. She tactfully avoids doing more than will assist In the perfection of thse dance, however. The young man plays the violin and does a little dancing on his own account. Something good in the singing ine is the work of Roma and Romanelli, Italian serenaders. One of the pair sings to the accom- paniment of violin and guitar. His violin and can y any position. Earl Thomas is a cyclist of ability. He has a makeup that is extremely comic. He rides the bicycle and the monocycle with equal ease and has a bajancing stunt that is diffi- cult. Dick and Ruby Wren are singing and dar comedians, “THE COVERED TRAIL” 1S OYNAMIG THRILLER rhe Covered Trail,” the J. B. ner feature which closes at the Iris theater, Is often referred to as a dynamic thriller. It apparently is well named, as dynamite {s the only word that can adequately describe the action J. B. Warner seems to have solved the public's wants, and to satisfy them he ofttimes plays with his very life to inject real thrills into his pictures. Not only that, but he knows th chnic of acting, and his rem le screen personality has made him the most-talked-of star in the firmament of western filmdom Too much cannot be sald of beau- tiful Ruth Dwyer, who ably sup. ports Warner in “The Covered Trail.” She makes an {deal leading woman, and is one of the best-liked stars in the business, Director Jack Nelson has made “The Covered Trail” one of the best western fea. tures ever offered the public. It’s truly enough a dynamic thriller. * ONVENTION NIADE RECORD (Continuea from Page One.) for Senator Jim Watson of Indiana, when he was placed before the con vention as a vice presidential as- pirant. At the conclusion of the nominating speech, the Hoosiers and a few scattering delegates from the other states started an uproar. They did not get an awful uproar. They did not get an answer, how: ever, and the end came unexpected. ly. Suddenly, when the roll call was resumed, a blatant brass band crash ed into the hall. The convention was startled. No one knew just what the invasion meant, until the brass equipped musicians, grouped below the speaker's platform, burst forth into “The Banks of the Wa- bash.” Then everyone knew it was a belated boost for Senator Jim, There was tolerant consideration of the band for fully five minutes and then some unregenerate . delegate called for the “regular order.” The band disappeared and, with it, into the gathering gloom of night dis appeared one of the best booms that ever has come from Indiana, The patriot who nominated Sen ator Jim warned his Republican brethren that the wily Democrats surely were going to nominate either a presidential or a vice presi at the Arkeon. Now nobody knows who's going to stop the Invasion, Certainly “Hell and Maria,” versatile as he is, can’t be everywhere. Dr. Marion L. Burton, president of the University of Michigan who made the nominating speech for his New England friend, is a carrot top. ped gentleman. He is a splendid speaker, but the predicitions that he might win the vice presidency by his speech, went astray. The edu- cator has an attractive personality and he made a great hit with botl: delegates and spectators by casting his prepared address to the winds and going to his task extemporan. eously, replacing a rather dry nar- rative with one rich in anecdote and personal contact with the man he about to name Protesting at all times that he was not a politician and possessed none of the wiles of such, he never- theless caught the old political trick of not naming his man until the last two words, From the very begin- ning, however, the delegates and the galleries knew exactly the man he was talking of. Permanent Chairman Mondell saw to that. He announced at the outset tha Dr, Buron would be recognized to place in nominaion “President Coolidge.” From that time on the secret was out, It's hard to keep anything dark in a national political conven- tion. The meanest man in Cleveland has been discovered. On his way to the convention Thursday he ran out of gas some/10 miles out of the city. Passing autolst generously ented to share his gas with the led person. I turn, the stall ed one gave his rescuer a ticket to the convention. It was a ticket for the fifth day. It was known in ad- vance there would be but three days of the sitting. Bill Wrigley, of Chicago, the chewing gum king, got one vote for vice president on all three of the ballots taken. Like his tenacious product, Mr. Willlam Wrigley, Jr.’s one vote stuck. ‘ On the second vice presidential ballot some lone North Carolina delegate voted for formed Governor Joseph M. Dixon of Iowa. This so enthused a spectator in the gallery that he led himself tn threo rousing cheers. Some cynic sugested the erfthusiast must be Governor Dixon himself, But it wasn’: , _— sa 2? 2 Wyoming Motorwsy < ? 2 pial nsrtacin ns hacala Cal! the Tribune for 1:1 gay tn formation. 25¢ MAT.
