What has become of that powerful little group of states- men which could meet in the back room of a hotel, or any other place, and say just what a Republican convention should do? Four years ago they were in their glory. Today, they are scattered to the four winds. Small wonder then, that the Cleveland conyention seems different. Call the roll of the president- makers of 1920. They met in the Blackstone hotel in Chicago early on’a Saturday raorning when the delegates and the casual observers thought the convention was in a serious deadlock. There was Sena- tor Lodge of Massachusetts, and ex-Senator Murray Crane of the same state; “Pussyfoot,” they used to call him. There was Senator Smoot of Utah; Senator Knox of Pennsylvania, and there was the all-powerful Senator Penrose on the far end of a long distance telephone line lead'ng to his sick room at At- Tantic City. There was George Harvey, the journalist, who had “made” Grover Cleveland and Wood- row Wilson before he turned Repub- Ucan to “make” Warren G. Hard- ing. There was Will H. Hays of Indiana, chairman of the Republican national committee, and last, but by no means least, there was Harry M. Daugherty of Ohio, the very man who had predicted from the. begin- ning that the nomination of 1920 would go to the winner of the back room conference. Death laid a heavy hand on that assemblage. Murray, Crane was first ‘to go, then Knox and then Penrose. Four of the others are here in Cleveland, but they arte scat- tered ‘among the crowds, far from the throne room or even the ap- proaches to the seats of the mighty. There is Senator Lodge, all-power- ful in the selection of a candidate from Ohio four years ago, but not consulted today about any detail of the candidacy of a man from his own home state. Few persons real- ize the full extent of the political igneminy wlich has come to the senior senator from the land of the sacred cod. For 24 years Henry Cabot Lodge has been a masterful figure at his party conventions. He actually has presided over. three of the last six national gatherings. He ‘was permanent chairman at Phila- Celphia in 1900 when McKinley was named for a second term. He wielded the gavel again in 1908 when Taft first was named and he steered the ship of the G. O. P. at Chicago four years ago when War: ren Harding received what proved to be a sentence of death. At the intervening conventions, Cabot Lodge either was chairman of the resolutions committee which drafted the platform or held other high of- fice. It remained for 1924 to see his fall from grace. It is asserted that he has failed to support Presi- dent Coolidge and he is paying the penalty. He has been bereft of al- most everything except his vote and that he must cast for the Hon. Calvin Coolidge. Harry M. Daugherty, ex-attorney general, is here as a delegate-nt- large from Ohio. This was an honor he could not win when he was “making” a president, but it has come to him at the hands of the people of his state after his resigna- tion from the cabinot was requested Mr. Daugherty ts very “regular” and is going along with his delega- and tion,. ready to vote solemnly solidly for Mr. Coc when the of ‘the loting begins. But the “Coolidge machine” heeds him not Colonel George Harvey, the presi dent moker-extruordinary and pres! dent-breaker. plenipotentiary, is her in all the glory of his new oveupa tion as the editor-in-c f of a datly newspaper. The colonel arrived with a couple of secretaries, a valet and a retinue of reporters. He came out on a train from Wash ington with Frank W. Stearns, of the Coolidge campaign cabinet, but never the twain did,meet. There will be no conferences in the colonel’s rooms in Cleveland, only the busy clic® of a couple of versa tile and volatile typewriters. Perhaps the colonel is waiting to do his stuff at the New York con vention later in the month. One band blew Into town from somewhere on Sunday morning and played a couple of tunes in the rain. Mr. Coolidge does not need any bands. A few of his photographs adorn the hotel lobbies, but that is all There are no pictures any- where, no candidates with a visible means of support. Usually the hotel lobbies at convention time are a veritable picture gallery. Four dancing elephants, magni- ficent specimens of the mastoden, are performing at a local vaudeville theater. Between turns, they parado the streets and trumpet in front of the Coolidge headquarters at the Hotel Cleveland. Convention special trains make strange car-follows. Coming out from Washington was Senator Jim- mle Wadsworth of New York, who originally was slated for permanent chairman, and former Representa- tive Frank Mondell of Wyoming, who succeeded to the job. Young “T. F was on the same train. He carried his own grip through the station at Washington and once aboard the train he “shucked” his coat and went about visiting al] evening in his shirt sleeves. Just as all the visiting newspaper men were remarking that anyway the Democratic convention at New York wouldn't be cool and cut and dried, Tom Love of Texas, original McAdoo man, blew into Cleveland. “What's all this talk about Mc- Adoo not having enough delegates to win?’ he demanded. “Why, it's al, over but the shouting. The D@mocratic convention is going to be just like this one—all fixed up beforehand.” The first casualty of the conven- tion occurred at the Hollenden hotel, where the egg-boiling machine broke down under the strain. The dele- gates had to switch to sunny sides up or scrambled. This doesn’t mean there are not plenty of hard- boiled in town. Au contraire, as the French would say. In G. O. P.
