F | 2 LA FOLLETTE 5 DETERMINED TOWAKE RACE Liberal Weekly “Editor Has Interview With Wisconsin Solon. By DAVID LAWRENCE. (Copyright, 1924, Casper Tribune.) WASHINGTON, June 5.—Robert M. LaFollette, senior senator from Wisconsin, has decided definitely to make the race for the presidency an independent, irrespective of whether William G. McAdoo is named on the Democratic ticket, or Calvin Coolidge on the Republican ticket, for he has given up hope of “boring from within” the two old line parties to secure the enactment of a progressive program. Mr. LaFollette believes congress should not adjourn now, but should stay in session all summer, if neces- sary, to accomplish agricultural re- lief and other needed reforms, and is urging his followers in the senate and house to block adjournment so, far as is possible and to make their record clear on this point. These are the opinions expressed by Oswald Garrison Villard of New. York City, editor of The Nation, the Liberal weekly, after a conference with Senator ‘ollette today. Villard goes bi complete the o mittee to be affiliated with the Con- ference for Progressive Politic Action, which is to meet in Cleve- land on July 4, for the purpose of nominating Senator LaFollette for tho presidency. “Dhe friends of Mr. said Mr. Villard, “are convinced that in taking the stand that he does, he is far less actuated by any effect it may have upon his own personal fortunes than by his desire to give the voters of the United States an alternative to voting for either of tho old parties, which we deem hopelessly corrupt. We feel that the great need of the country LaFollette,” today is a progressive © politica’ par with a clear-cut program of reform, much along the lines of those urged by Woodrow Wilson in his first campaign for the presi- dency when ke called for radical re- form and declared that the president of the United States theretofore had to go hat in hand to Wall Street for orders. “I believe that Mr. LaFollette finds himself in the same position of Senator Norris of Nebraska, who, it will be remembered, did not wish to run again for the senatorship be- cause, after years of experience in Washington, he had come to the conclusion that it was hopeless to ‘buck the system‘ as it functions in Washington. Mr. LaFollette he tried for more than 30 years to re- form his party from: within, He has never bolted the Republican party and did not leave it in 1912 when Roosevelt cut loosé.. It is, therefore, a tremendous wrench for him to do what he has said that he will do if the two national conven- ms do not afford him the ground r believing that they mean to purge themselves in dead earnest. Since there is no likelihood what- ever of the conventions doing this, L.can not escape the belief that he will announce his candidacy as soon as th ouference for Progressive Politi tion has met. “I am frankly astounded at the offers of support Mr. LaFollette has had for an independent movement, not only from ‘mportant labor « unizations, but from men who were velt in 1912. I do not think it will be hard to organize a non-partisan committee in New York composed of people of varying political view- points who feel that they must have, n ticket that they can vote for with: out apologies. Of course, people who feel this way are not thinking merely about 1924. We want to see a permanent organization come into being which shall elevate the whole tone of our political life and give us a new-@d lea ship along the lines ef the progressivism of Theodore Roosevelt and Woodrow Wilson of 1912. It would be a great mis. fortune, of course, if out of this movement there should be nothing definite left on which .to build in the years to come. No one scan deny that there is no essential dif. ference whatsoever between the Re: publican and Democratic parties as they ‘are constituted today. It is just like the fight over the income taxes—a question whether they should be fixed at 30 2 or 40 cent and not a rence of principle or po! same is true of the tariff situation today. As the South becomes a land of manufactures, more and more Demo crats are golng cver to the protec- who would be considered for the vice presidency on the LaFollette ticket and he said probably an east- ern labor man, but the matter is being very seriously debated be- cause of the possibility, remote though it may be, of an electoral contest going after March 4 next into the senate, in which case the upper house must choose from the two leading vice presidential candi- dates. He believes it is impossible to forecast how many states LaFol- lette will carry, but he 1s surprised at the number of politicians and journalists who say to him that the Wisconsin senator will capture at least nine or ten states. Because of the close friendship be- tween Mr. Villard and Senator Lafellette, the foring views may be considered significant AMUSEMENT QUESTION AND CHURCH ATTITUDE TO BE SERMON TOPIC Rev. L. EB. Carter, pastor of the First Methodist church, will speak next Sunday morning on the amuse- ment question as involved in the re- cent legislation enacted by the gen- eral conference of the Methodist church held during the manth of May, at Springfield, Mass. In an- noun: the subject, Rev. Carter said, io much misunderstanding has been caused by the newspaper reports of the legislation of the general conference, that I desire to explain just what was done. Evi- dently the newspaper men who have written upon the subject do not understand tie past or present atti- tude of the Methodist church upon the amusement question. Even such a well informed writer as Arthur Brisbane has recently writ- ten a statement on the subject which is entirely misleading."” —— TRACK MEN RETURN HOME WITH HONORS The three track men who went to the National Interscholastic meet in last wee! returned yester- day together with their coach, Dean Morgan. They have nothing but praise for the'way they had been treated in Chicago and while not scoring outstanding honors did as well as many schools that had sent representatives much greater dls- tances. George Goble took fourth place in the mile run and secured the only two points which Casper annexed. His time was 4:30 4-5— 2-5'of a second behind the winner.
