But now I've shot trouble, That's a new one. I wonder what they'll have me shoot- ing next?” The part is that of a wire repairman for a power company in the western mountains and Mix plays the role to perfection. SCREEN CREW ALMOST BECOMES PIRATE BAND “Fifteen men on a dead man’s chest—ye, he, ho! and a bottle of cum!" Captain. Applejack, the seven- teenth century pirate, was swagger- ing along the deck of his ship, in the person of Matt Moore, the screen actor, and his crew.of screen cut- throats were singing lustily over their near grog. They had set sail from Long Beach, fornia, and were far beyond the three-mile limit, where a man could raise a thirst. That was about all he could raise, Eager “extras,” posted as look- outs in the crow’s nest, ready to Sight a ship on the horizon, were looking anxiously for one of these rum running vessels they had read about. They were willing to commit rea! piracy themselves if they came across a rum ship. Fred Niblo, producing the picture, “Strangers of the Night,” watched them anxiously, as their enthusiasm for rum kept running higher and higher. ‘Turning to Matt Moore, Who appears in the picture as the pirate chief, “Captain Applejack,” he suggested that the psychological effect of too many rum songs might Prove disastrous. There were mur-. murings among the crew. *‘Where's that rum ship? Oh, baby! Lead me to it!" Mr. Niblo began to feel that if a rum ship were really close at hand, he would have a mutiny among the actors {f he tried to re- eee the wholesome spread for bread NUCOA fine as shortening in high grade pastry the original - always sweet a2eee YOEENG Continuous 1 to 11 STARTING TODAY SUSPENSE! Adolphe Menjou, Charles de Roche and Huntly Gor- don are featured opposite Pola Negri in this production, GIRL IN PINK’ GOOD COMEDY AT COLUM Bud Brownie’s Budding Beauties Scored another knockout last night When they presented “The Girl in Pink” for the first time at the Col- umbia theater, Those who saw the show marveled that the troupe could have played so long and still have so many novel ideas, original twists, and fresh comedy. Brownlie, Ver- non, Englehart, Mrs. Brownie, and other members of the troupe appear in character parts that make them unforgettable. The feature picture {s exceptional- ly worth while at this time. It is “Going Up" with Douglas MacLean in the leading role. Mr. MacLean plays the part of one who has writ- ten a book about aeronautics and who himself has never been in the air at all. He is besieged with re- quests to demonstrate his skill and finally complies. Some of the things he does while in the alr are hair raisers. “Going Up" may be compared in Ways with “Safety Last’ which will come to the Columbia to- norrow, son HARRY CAREY HAS ROLE THAT THRILLS IN FILM “The Lightning Rider,” which the Wyoming theater is showing start- ing today gives Harry Carsy a splen- did opportunity to show how versa- tile he is, because -he has a dual characterization. By day, before the Villagers, he is “slow Phil Morgan” who finds all his citement in whit- ting dolls for children, but at night he becomes the fearlesa man of ac- tion, scouring the country to find the Black Mask, the bandit who is the bane of the countryside. To draw the fire of the outlaw, ‘Phil dresses like him. He makes love to his lady fair in the interest- ing garb, and, when the lady's father is murdered, Phil finds him- self in rather a tight hole. It is this and other situations as thrilling that make. ‘The Lightning Rider” first rate entertainment. The suspense {s sustained throughottt and there is plenty of rapid-fire action. Unlike the usual “western,” “The Lightning Rider” has vivid interiors as Well as beautiful exterior shots. The photography throughout is ex- cellent.
