NEW YORK, May 9.—A pamphlet entitled “What everybody wants to know about Alfred BE. Smith,” de- scribing the life, accomplishments, views and ideas of the governor of New York state, will be circulated throughout the country. The pamphlet quotes W. G. Me- Adoo as having said of Governor Smith: “His public career has qualified him by training and experience for great office and his ability and haracter tit him admirably for the ‘discharge of responsible duties. The only mention of Governor Smith’s position on prohibition is: “He petitioned congress to permit several states to modify the defini- tion in the Volstead law. German Trade To Be Halted By the Soviet BERLIS, May 9.—({By The Asso- ciated Press)—Satisfaction not hav- ing yet been given by the German government for the police raid on the quarters of the Russian com- mercial delegation here, the Rus- sian embassy has announced that it is temporarily putting an end to ail commercial relations with Germany in addition to closing the commercial cffice in Berlin. WASHINGTON, May 9.—Officials of the Ku Klux Klan interested themselves to aid the election of Senator Mayfield, Democrat, Texas, in 1922, it was testified today by for- mer Representative R, L. Henry at the senate hearing on the contest of George B. B. Peddy; Republican, for Mayfield’s seat. Henry, a primary candidate against Mayfield, said that on May 21 at Paris, Texas, he was called into conference by Dr,. H. W, Evans, now imperial wizard of the Klan, and other klan leaders in Texas to get the field clear for Mayfield.
