The man stays in the car at the edge of town and sends his wife and children in to tell a hard luck story. The secretary said that {f that was stopped, the joint efforts of the de. partment of agriculture and the au- thorities of California would stamp out the disease in a very short time. “Ninety per cent of the cases of the infection {s spread by careless people who travel from farm to farm,” said Secretary Wallace. “We quarantined Orange county, Call- fornia, last week because some cat- tle buyers and traders persisted in visiting farms in Los Angeles coun ty, which is in the quarantine dis: trict. We were certain these péople would spread the dis and quar antined Orange county as a. precau tion. Our suspicions were justified, 4s we have an outbreak of the dis. ease reported in that county. If we could only get people to understand the importance of keeping away from Infected herds, and if people in in- fected districts would keep away from healthy herds, this disease would be wiped out {n short order. One of the most serious cases of {n- fection in a large band of sheep was due to one person who insisted on riding over the country visiting dif. ferent ranges to see if the stock there had the diseane. “Curtosity ig a very general human weakness, but a very dangerous weakness when we have to deal with such a highly Infectious disease. We have, had fine’ cooperation from the neopl of California, and if they could only control those few thought- Jess persons who run - about the country from infected districts to non-infected, our jolnt efforts would be crowned with success very soon.
