BERLIN, May 3.—(United Press) —The ord Terror” ts the night: mare of German automobile manu- facturers. The American industrialist is at the doors, ready to break jnto their domain, which heretofore they were allowed to exploit at will. The prohibition against importing automobiles meade German manufac- tures the undisputed kings within Germany. Prices in consequence soared and were double those of for- eign products of the same make. In the r 1923 the number of motor trucks was increased from 44,000 to 62,000, that of cars from $2,000 to 100,009, and that of motor. cycles from 38,000 to 60,000. With these numbers Germany is in the fourth world place with motor trucks, in the fifth with cars and in the third with motorcycles. According to per capita figures, she ranks sixth in Europe with France second. This Increase in the German bust- ness is remarkable especially in view of the generally reported slack bust- ness of German industry. Though German labor {s cheap, German automobile prices ,have nothing to do whatever with the price of labor Involved. Standardization, the clue success of the international auto- mobile industry, has completely been neglected in Germany, and the wage question comes in only in that it has aided to perpetuate this negligence. This ot imply that German products are inferior to the products of other countr' But the method of production ¢ ainly is, German automobile industry has become a luxury industry. It paid and was able to pay enormous at- tention to the single car. In fact, it worked according to methods that may have been considered efficient in pre-industrial eras. Its future, however, depends on the production individual machines. To a certain extent the “Ford Ter- ror” has been turned into “Ford Fever.” Several automobile firms are struggling to obtain the agency from Ford to fit up his engines, of which necessories are ready at Hamburg harbor, for conquest of the country. His German and_ Scandinavian branch offices are literally besieged by applicants. The present amounts Ford has ready at Hamburg are too small however, to permit him to “flood” the country. But his reputation in Germany for being both a clever organizer and ruthless makes the amounts grow to hundreds of ship: loads in the nightmares of German automobile manufacturers. FREQUENT DRAINAGE OF THE CRANKGKSE | GIVES ENGINE LIFE Few motorists appreciate the value and necessity of draining the crank case at frequent intervals. Carburetor Troubles and How to Prevent Them. The modern at:tomobile is prac: tically trouble proof and will rarely give any trouble at all if it is given a little care and attention at the proper time. Most automobile owners drive up to the filling station and trust to the strainers on the filling station pump to prevent any water or dirt entering the gasoline tank. It is almost impossible, however, to pre- vent a certain amount of dirt and water getting into the tank, even although he gasoline is carefully strained. The car manufacturers recognize this, and provide drain plugs and strainers at various points to trap the sediment and prevent it reaching the carburetor where it can cause lots of trouble. Even with these precautions, however, it fs a fact that water and grit do sometimes get through these screens and cause trouble. If you are unlucky enough to get some water in the carburetor, your experfence will be something like this—You may be driving along the road when all at once your engine will stop firing for a few seconds then suddenly start again, and at the same moment you may hear a violent explosion in the muffler You stop and look around but ap- parently find nothing wrong and STANDARD OIL BRINGS FOREIGN SALESMEN 10 DETROM AUTO SCHOOL Some interesting methods are em- ployed by the Standard O11 Com- pany of New York to maintain the efficiency of thelr mammoth world wide sales organization. If grit or dirt gets into the gaso- line, it may put the vacuum tank out of order or cause trouble in the carburetor. Suppose you are driv- ing along’ the road, then all at once the engine starts to misfire.and you hear the carburetor popping back. The trouble may be due to’a small particle of grit in the jet of the carburetor, If a piece of grit the size of a pin head gets into the jet it will block it up complete and cause the engine to stop altogether. I have given you just a few of the troubles you may have if you do clean out the gasoline system now and again. , It is not a difficult operation, and should not take more than half an hour on the average car, A Start at the gasoline tank. First, remove the filler cap and examine the hole in it. If this gets blocked up, a vacuum will be created as the gasoline is drawn out of the tank and it will be impossible to draw any gasoline out of the tank even although it is half full of gaso- line. Make sure therefore, that the hole i clear. Next take out the drain plug or open up the sediment trap at the bottom of the tank and draw off about half a pint of gasoline. This will remove any sediment or water that may have collected at this point The vacuum tank is the next part to attend to.
