OIL INDUSTRY TAKES SPURT IN COUNTRY] Improved Prospects Lead to Resumption of ‘Wildcatting on Large Scale; Decline in California Significant. Joath to relinquish this business, hence the activity in new felds. But the Midcontinent, Texas, Ar- kansas, Louisiana and Wyoming, Colorado, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Mexican fields aro also looking for new supplies to keep pace. The Shell Union Oi! corporation, a subsidiary of the Royal Dutch company, has opened headquarters in Denver and set a force of geologists to map Colorado for oll. “Wo are here because we believe oil prospects in this state are good,’ A. T. Schwennéfson, geologist in charge, said. The Shell company is prepared to spend any amount of money justified by the result of tho survey. In Oklahoma and Kansas opera- tors are hastening developments over a wide area. The-outstanding development has been the discovery of 4,000 foot sand in the Tonkawa field, Oil bearing sands at lower That simply means that the drills are biting down: toward the oil sands in un. tried territory all over this con- tnent. with renewed vigor. Oil prices have bettered and evetaeeng for atime slackened off. The industry has not funy re covered from the tremendous flow of oll which had to be stored in 1923, but the betterment of condi- tions has given encouragement to owners and leasers of lands and since Colonel Drake completed the first well in Pennsylvania in 1859, oil men have never been content to. let their Mquid gold remain below the surface. “There has. been a heavy decline Bonds :: Stocks Alea Chemical & Dye ---—- 69% American Can 101 5 American I7B American 21% Ts 60% at 125% Tobacco -—.-.--.140% B Woolen -..---—--. 64 Copper en-nnn---e= (32 10085 Bessemer -<-. Some of this loss has been offset by the opening up of shut in wells. Tho large com- panies are endeavoring to offset it further by the drilling of new wells in untried fields. At present, 59 wildeat wells are being drilled in below the 4,500 foot level in the Santa Fe Springs district and wells may be driven to 7,000 feet there. At the same time 116 new wells have been started in the Kern River fields, where drilling has been inactive since last September. The new Tor- rance field has 153 under way and those completed are turning out something under 50,000 barrels a day. The Dominguez field has 20 new wells and is gushing out about £4,000 barrels a day. There are 553 new wells altogether being drilled in the state. The California producers last year shipped their oil through the Panama canal at the rate of 200,000 barrels daily and sold it in direct competition with the Midcontinen® and Mexican fields, keeping 195 tankers in commission. The, are gusher in Cotton Valley, Webster parish, Louisiana, is believed to have assured the future of that dis- trict. Although there are tremendous stocks on hand still, consumption has grown to enormous proportions. The amount used in 1923 was 20 per cent above that of the previous year, and the rate of increase this year bids fair to be even greater, taking into consideration the speed at which motor vehicles are being made and solid. The new explora- tions, while they have added ma- terially to production shave not un- covered and “bonanza” fields and well informed oil men feel that the clouds are clearing over the future of the industry. |. | Standard O11 of partment of Agriculture.)—Hogs— Receipts, 24,000; slow; uneven, most- ly Se lower; lower grades and mixed, 5 to 10c¢ off; bulk good and choice weighty butchers, $7.25@7.35; top, $7.25; bulk desirable 160 to 225 pound weight, $7-15@7.25; better grade: 140 to 150 pound averages, largely $6.60@7.0 king sows, mostly $6.60@6.75; killing pigs, weak to 26c lower; bulk good and choice strong weight, $5.75@6.25; heavyweight hogs, $7.10@7.35; medium, $7.05@ 7:30; lUght, $6.80@7.30; light light, $5.85@7.15; packing sows, smooth, $6.65@6.80; packing sows, rough, $6.50@6.65; slaughter pigs, $4.50@ 6-25, — Sheep—Receipts, 11,000; fairly ac- tive; fat lambs, 15 to 25e higher; sheep, weak; choice ,fat wooled lambs, early, $16.65; choice clipped lambs, $14.90; odd lots medium to good fat wooled ewes, $7.50@8.00; clipped kinds, $7.00@7.50.
