PAGE FOURTEEN. CONDITIONS OF/SETTING THE STYLES] BRITISH TURNED DOWN BY SOVIET Negotiations Must. Be Started With Clean Slate—Trotzky. MOSCOW, April 17.—War Mintis- ter Trotzky, speaking at Baku, is reported to have upheld M. Zino- vieff's statements that Russia will not meet the claims put forward by the British and that an agreement 1s possible only if both countries start with a clean slate, after which the soviet government will meet any obligations the Russian delegation may sign at the London confer~ ence. Regarding with Rumania, the breaking off of the negotiations at Vienna did not mean there was danger of war, he said, although war was still among the possibilities. The Bessarabian question would probably only be solved in connection with the. fate of Germany, which country he characterized as ‘still the battlefield in the revolution of the west. Foreign capital should be per- mitted to enter, he declared, but in strictly limited quantities as com- the soviet relations pared with the pre-war era, in order to maintain the accumulation of wealth in the hands of socialistic state instead of the capitalists. NEW YORK, April 17.—Nearly a million needles are busy today in preparation of the Easter displays and about nine-tenths of them are zipping through silk. The end of lent 1s no time for borrowed finery but the looms of the great manufac- turers this year have provided wild silks even for tame incomes. This does not mean that quality has been sacrificed or that prices have fallen materially. It means simply, that the artistic designs the American manufacturers have originated have given opportunity for nearly every woman to emphasize her good points through the medium of their wares at an outlay commensurate with her purse. Perhaps the popularity of there fabrits may be traced to the fact that the riot of color which they present has given the winter weary city dwellers of the north an ad- vance touch of spring. Some of the manufacturers have not been con- tent with the silk appeal but have added to it the lustrous richness of velvet. Many of the new silks carry velvet stripes, dots or blocks of vel- vet weave adding to the richness of the effect. ‘The spring colorings are vivid but not glaring. In fact the blurred, blendeG effect so noticeable in the better class of imported woolen also has been utilized on the silk looms. This effect has been attained not by dyes but in the weave itself. No- where {s this softening effect so no- ticeable as in the plaid designs which have gotten away from the more staid and ,sober pat- terns of the clan tartans of Scot- land into the color scheme of spring. ‘The printed silks are even more re- markable in design than the so0- called specialty fabrics. But whatever the fabric of the Easter frock of 1923, it is by their scarfs ye shall know them. ‘The shops on and off Fifth avenue are full of beautiful and expensive scarfs, shawls and squares designed to acd a touch of individuality to the Easter costume. One may pay as ones purse or ones charge account -will stand. But a woman must indeed be ignorant of her own poise and capabilities who cannot design and make one for herself with no more expense than the purchase of a yard and a half of silk fabrics, with the ac- companying erepe or lace border en- tails. Speaking of laces, their vogue continues unabated both for adorn- - ment of dresses, hats and lingerie but it is a noticeable fact that the most elaborate displays are found on table and tea cloths. These in elaborateness and beauty, often view with the marvelous altar cloths of medieval Europe—perhaps be- cause the modern household so fre- quently makes a God of {ts atomach. No mention of silks would be com- plete without reference | to their use in the most recent pajamas. Many of these are designed closely after the modern riding habit with the trousers cut and closely fitted of black silk or satin fn the jadh- pore cut tightly following tho lines of the leg from the knee down. The coat section bears a close resem- blance to a polo ahirt and so attired any woman is prepared to mount and ride the wildest nightmare an injudicious midnight supper can in- @uce. reese Ten thousand Kuman skulls and skeletons are included in the col- lections of the New National Mu- seum at Washington.
