Mr. Blue's acting is always pleas- antly human and when he enacts the character of a young man who has been placed by circumstance in a wrong light with his fellow men both because of scarred features and a blasted reputation, he gets the sympathy of the audience at once. He cannot help desiring vengeance upon those who have kept him from happiness and when a surgical operation removes the scars from his face he goes back to the old home town for the purpose of obtaining that vengeance. Finally love and honesty triumph and the inhabitants of a town see wherein they have worked a great wrong, though they are not able to see ft until their own happiness is affected. Irene Rich has the role of the model woman patiently waiting for the man she has loved all her life though finally beginning to yield to hor father’s wishes. ‘The xense of triumph possessed by the hero when his name {» cleared up and he shows how very well he has fooled them as to his identity must be felt by the audience, Eg ee oka “SHADOW OF THE EAST” SUCCESSOR TO “SHEIK” E. M. Hull's, “The Shadow of the East," as presented by William Fox at the America theater, {s a worthy r to that author's other fa mous novel and motion picture, “The Sheik.” With Frank Mayo, Mildred Harris and Norman Kerry in the leading roles, this story of the enchanting East is told with a graphic forcefulness which brings home the true power of the Orient. Unlike “The Sheik,” however, “The Shadow of the East” deals with the effect of that mysterious country upon a white man. In the case of “The Sheik,” the central character was a Bedouin, an Ara- bian chieftain. The picture will close an engagement at the local theater tonight. DRIGING OF MONTMARTE EXPLAINED IN ARTICLE The Montmartre, far-named Paris quarter, which is the locale for many of the scenes in Gloria Swanson’s latest Paramount picture, “The Humming Bird,” due at the Rialto theater tomorrow has had three or- igins according to a translation of a recent article that appeared in “Ex- celsior,” a Paris paper. During the Roman period of Paris there stood a-temple on the hill of Montmartre, which was dedicated to the god of war, Mars, and was ap proximately situated on the spot where now the square of Tertre is located. In Latin, then, one would have said Mons Martis, Another temple, that of the god Mercury, stood about the same time at the place where nowadays one finds the Moulin de la Galette; the existence of this sanctuary permitted one to talk in Latin of Mons Mer- eurl!, Indeed one finds in a chron!- cle of the seventh century the term “In Monte Mercuril." The alterna- tion of the name in the course of centuries made of Mons Mercuri, first Mont Merce, then Mont Mer- tre, and finally Montmartre. A third explanation which seems More acceptable still, is the foflow- ing: It is possible that St. Denis and his companions became martyrs on Montmartre, One found on the old Montmartre walls, though not the tomb of the saint, the remains vf @ tomb chambe which was consecrat ed to him. Montmartre would then be derived from Mons which means mountain of martyrs. It 1s, moreover, an established fact that Martre, Martrais, and Mar trois are names given in several other cities to squares or streets to Tecall the fact that executions took Place there ~~ SEND IT To TH PEARL WHITH LAUNDRY PHC 7 Martyrum, | D, THURSDAY NIGHT DANCING One of the Best Nights in the Week to Go to The Arkeon—Always a Jovial Crowd The long looked for return of Bud Brownie to Casper has been achieved at last and that comedian will open an indefinite engagement today with his own troupe at the Columbia thea- ter. “Barney Google," has been selected as the comedy with which to make the initial appearance of the new troupe.
