BLORIN SWANSON WL COME 10 RIALTO THI FRIDAY WITH LATES Betrayed by her own kind, arrest- e@ and thrown into prison—an air raid—escape. Toinette, queen of the ‘Apaches, played by Gloria Swanson, has quite a time of {t in her latest Paramount picture, “The Humming Bird," which will be shown for the first time at the Rialto theater Fri- day. Sho plays a dual role—takes a boy's part—first time in her career as a star. Edward Burns ts the man, Sidney Olcott directed the picture, which ts an adaptation by Forrest Halsey of the stage play of the same title by Maude Fulton. Gloria revels in it. You will too, oS MYSTICISM BIG PART OF AMERICA PICTURE Mysticism with a bit of the super natural permeates the picture “The Shadow of the East,”’ another sensa- tion from the fertile mind of E. } Hull who wrote “The Shiek.” The productfon opened yesterday at the America theater. It stars Frank Mayo and Mildred Harris while Nor- man Kerry and Evelyn Brent have important roles also. An Englishman living tn the or- fent marries a native girl, afterwards regretting his act. Because of his friendship for one of his own race his Indian wife grows jealous and ktils herself. The Hindu servant vows that his master shall not for- get the native wife and throughout the rest of the play spends his time and his knowledge of magic in an effort to keep the whiteman separat- e4 from the white woman. Love finally triumphs however, From the standpoint of the actor's art Norman Kerry {s conspicuous in the picture and his individuality re- mains in the mind after that of the others is faded. He plays the part of a Hindu with an Oxford finish who also loves the beautiful English wo- man but who has the instinct of a gentleman and gives way to his friend, aE “BEFYING DESTINY” 15 RIALTO PICTURE TODAY Monte Blue has the leading male role in Grace Sanderson Michie's latest and best photoplay, “Defying Destiny,” which has its premiere at the Rialto today. Mr. Blue, who scored heavily as the doctor in Main Street, is assured an even greater success in this his most recent vehicle, if one can judge by the applause which greeted some of iis scenes. Irene Rich, who played opposite Mr. Blue, also deserves much credit for her sympathetic characterization MRS. IDA ORTON N Every Woman Needs a Tonic eat Some Period of Life of the wealthy girl, who in spite of adverse public opinion never loses her trust in, nor her love for, her unfortunate sweetheart. The rest of the cast contains such noted artists as Tully Marshall, Jackie Saunders, Russel! Simpson and Z. Wall Covington, “Defying Destiny” is first class entertainment and those who enjoy an interesting story, delightfully enacted, capably directed and ar- tistically photographed, will do well to visit the Rialto theater during the next two days. HUD BROWNIE’S TROUPE OPENS HERE TOMORROW AS COLUMBIA FEATURE Direct from a 10 weeks’ run in Denver Bud Brownie's “Budding Beauties" will open an engagement tomorrow afternoon at the Colum- bia theater with a program that is suaranteed to be enjoyable. It has been sometime since Bud Brownlie has appeared before Casperites and there has been a continuous clamor for his return here. The organiza- tion which he now heads has achieved remarkable success in Den- ver and has scored triumph after triumph. Featured among the Playegs are the members of the Cowboy quartet, @ group of singers who put pep into thelr work. They are Jerry Cox, Jimmy McDonald, Ralph Vernon and Bud Browne. Principals among the feminine menibers of the com- pany are Betty Bates, Mrs. Bud Rrownte, Billie Englehart and Nellie Richards. The Budding Beauties chorus consists of May Reynolds, Helen Boles, Alice Vernon, Rose Wilson, Polly Wiggins, Dean Mor- rell, Evelyn Cross and Ruby Bell. There will be one performance in the @fternoon and two in the eve ning. “Barney Google” will be the opening comedy. The present show at the Colum- bia is the vaudeville which closes there this evening. This consists of four excellent acts featuring comedy, singing, dancing and ath- letic work. The Martin! Singers have proved that they possess mar- velous voices and that: they are worthy of the fine record which they have achieved. Shirley and Grant have some new dances and are extremely facile in putting them across. Clifton Rand {is an acrobat who does not confine himself to that alone but brings all his talent toward the success of a humorous act. Wilson and Bard are comedla: of the type to succeed anywhere. a COWBOY COMEDY SHOW NOW AT THE WYOMING “Boss of the Bar Z" is the musical comedy which opened yesterday at the Wyoming theater. ‘The estab- Ushment was packed and the only apparent reason that more persons did not see the play was because they could not get in. It is a west- ern comedy on the order of western comedies. The owner of a large ranch dies and his pretty daughter has to come west to see that it is working all right. The ranch fore- man falls in love with her, and that is the important part of the plot. Special numbers are exceptionally good. The picture is a mystery film that sustains interest to the end. eee REALISTIC TOUCHES IN CURRENT IRIS PICTURE An amusing incident occurred tn Read This Omaha, Nebr.—“‘In my young motherhood I had a siege of illness that affected me so that none of the organs were functioning I also had bearing pains. From the midst of them came loud-mouthed praises for the speaker and his ability-as a mayor. The noisy one was discovered to be an intoxicated person who had stag. gered into the crowd and drunkenly believing that he was listening to the real thing. The situation was so ludicrous that the director photo- graphed the stranger in action. “Putting it Over’ plays at the Iris today and Thursday ——_____- UNION GATHERING OF METHODISTS TONIGHT There will be a union meeting of USED CARS THAT WILL RUN |} We have a few careful lected Used Chevrolets and || Fords, open and closed models.
