- SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 24, 1924 QF GA URGE AY ASOOCIATION Curbing of Prices Is Possible, National Organization Says. WASHINGTON, D. C., Feb. 23.— Denouncing radical plans for the prevention of gasoline price in- creases as uneconomic, and deplor- ing the apathy of the public toward the rebound in gasoline prices, the National Motorists Association, through its headquarters here at the National Capital, has taken the stand that the motorist can offset the effect of rising prices, or even prevent them, if he really wants to. He can do this by means of thrift in the use of gasoline, according to a conclusion reached by the N. M. A. committee on }asoline. Thrift has been completely ignor- ed by the motorist during the past few months of low gas prices, ac- cording to Fred H. Caley, executive secretary of the N. M. A. As soon as prices started gotng down, the motorist began to get careless with fuel, he says, wasting it unneces- sarily and paving the way for the increases that have just been an- nounced. “Just how far the present rise peices will extend,” says “depends largely upon how longer the motorist ignores the fact that the price of gas is de- ‘pendent upon the demand for it. If use of gas, will bend every effort toward maintaining the large sur-|™ plus stock of fuel in the hands of the refiners, the price of gas can be kept within bounds.” The report issued by the N. M. A. gasoline committee takes parti- cular exception to the plan of using state funds to undersell the refiners as is the case in South Dakota, de- nouncing this plan as not merely economic folly but a gross incon venience to the motoring public. Speaking of the McMaster policy Caley says: “The price tag on the gallon of gas has never represented what the motorist has actually had to pay for gasoline, In the South Dakota plan, the motorist has been getting state gas at the cost of the quoted price, plus his share of the loss of revenue on State funds thus divert- ed, plus the inconvenience of hav- ing to go out of his way to find a state pump. The sum/of this in- variably equals the price of gas at the stations of the refiners and gas vendors, ee “Hippodromic plans for endeavor- ing to upset the law of supply and demand and force the refiners to lower prices can not be expectei to benefit the motorist. As a matter of fact, they tend to blind him to the fact that it’s the use he ob- tains from a gallon of gas that rep- resents its cost to him, not the price per gallon. “Many car owners are just dis covering how much gas they have been wasting. By cutting out this waste they will find that the rea) cost of gasoline is not going to be so dependent upon price, They are also scheduled to discover that in saving gas they will help to maintain a large surplus in the hands of the refiners, which means doing a share toward cutting the demand for gas occasioned by wastage. “If all the motorists would follow this example the N. M. A. believer that gas prices would soon start dropping Again. It was inevitable, at any rate, that the waste of gaso + line this winter should reduce gas stocks and send the price upward again, especially when production Was in process of curtailment.” —————— The Kennedy, Motor company seems to be cleaning house.
