Allenrhu has been tried and tested for years, and really marvelous re- sults have been accomplished in the most severe cases where the suffer- ing and agony was intense and piteous and where the patient was helpless, Mr. James H. February 18 is the new date fixed for the 10-round bout at St. Paul between Dave Shade of California and Billy Wells, the English junior middleweight. ~ An even dozen newcomers will be included in the squad of 32 players which Manager Killifer of the Chi- cago Cubs will take to California for spring training. The University of Washington basketball team has made an excel-, lent record this season, keeping out in front in both the Pacific coast and Northwest conference races, The 400-acre estate of the late William Rockefeller at Tarrytown, N. ¥., with a house containing 175 rooms, is to be converted into a country club of national character. QUIGK RELIEF FROM CONSTIPATION Get Dr. Edwards’ Olive Tablete That is the joyful cry of thousand# For these reasons it was among baseball men here that the transfer from the New York Yan- kees to the Cincinnati Reds would help Car! Mays, the only submarine pitcher in captivity. Mays has all the natural qualifi- cations of a great pitcher. He is young, as baseball players are rated, he is game and he is the most wil- Ung toiler in beseball, He didn't get along with the New York Yankees because he didn't, ike his surrounding and he couldn't get along with the manager of the club. Figuring that he would be happier in Cincinnati, that he can get along with the genial Pat Moran and that ‘his underhand delivery~ought to” go good against National League bat- ters who have never looked at it, the wise baseball men figured that he ought to be one of the best pitchers on,that fine staff which the Reds have gatb<:cu. For some reason, John McGraw expresses the opinion that Mays will be a bust for Moran. Perhaps McGraw rates him on the tempera- ment that he showed with the Yan- kees and figured that “he would be with the Reds just what he was with the Yankees—a crabby hermit, sulky and hard to get along with. If Mays wants to pitch in Cin- cinnati, if he gets a chance to do @ lot of work and gets away good, he ought to win a lot of games, be- cause he can pitch. Gathering from what he sald in an interview with Tommy Laird, the able sport editor of the San Francisco News, Mays not only wants to pitch for Pat Moran, but he is “crazy” to get started. Mays told Laird it was the most Pleasant surprise of his life when he heard that he had been released from the, Yanks to the Reds. “I have been trying for two years to get away from Huggins,” he said, “and I hed just about given up hope. I broke into the majors under Bill » and Pat Moran is just ke him. I naturally desired to play with the Reds, and you can imagine how pleased I was over the transfer.” Mays said that Hugging, didn't deserve much credit because he plays favorites too much and he blamed the Yankee manager for making a bust out of Frank O'Doul, because he wouldn't give him a chance. The former Yankee pitcher sald the Reds had given him the best contract he ever had, and that he was going to work his head off to make good for Pat Moran. sees Mays, who has established his home in Portland, also gave his opinion of American League bat- ters. He made the interesting observation that Harry Heilman was a much better hitter than Babe Ruth. i Ruth's greatest handicap, he sald, is his overanxiety to hit. He goes after all kinds of bad balls, while Heilman will not be pulled an any- thing he does not like. Ruth can hit only certain pitch: ers. Some pitchers can never get him out and others, like Urban Shocker, laugh at him, Mays said. He classed Ruth as a sporadic hitter who is weak against left- handers, while Heilman is a .400 hitter in every game against both kinds of pitching. Mays said he would walk Heil- man, a right-handed better, every time in a pinch, but that he would pitch to Ruth, a ieft-handed batter, every time. If the Reds get into the series against the Yankees next fall, Mays allows that he will pitch to the Babe and show that it {s easy for a smart pitcher to make a sucker out of the Babe. eee The recent Dundee-Moran fight was staged to decide the man best fitted to engage Benny Leonard in a championship bout this summer. ‘The only thing it decided, or proved, “We won the pennant, of reverses to remark: didn't get the best ee Friends of Walter Reuther’s, on the coast, after reading that the Dutch southpaw was playing golf with his boss, Charkéy Ebbets, in Florida, remarked to his father: “At last, Walter is in good with Ebbets.” To which Reuther, Sr., answered: “Ach, you should say Mr. Ebbets iss in goot mit mine Valter.” vee With Reuther perfectly satisfied with the contract Ebbets. gave him and apparently in complete accord with the boss, with whom he had disagreed so violently in the pasty it is not a guess that Reuther will win a iot of ball games for the Squire next season.
