The latter who has been meeting with all kinds of success around Boston since hd evaporated from Casper, refused to come on for the match and Kid Mex was con- sequently not seen in action. The other main go wil! bring to- gether Young Sol of Pueblo and Jimmie Woodhall of Thermopolis. Young Sol won decisively here in his last start from ‘Frankie West of Denver and proved himself a flashy youngster with a snappy left hand. In Woodhall he will be up against an old time Casper favorite who can be expected to give a good account of himself on all occasions. This match looks as though Young Sol wi'l do most of the pitching but Waodhall might surprise the boys. Ernie Ross, who is getting to be @ big favorite with Casper fans since he returned to the ring after a year’s absence, will be on for 10 rounds against Joe “Awful” Coffee, the Pueblo junior lightweight. This Will be the first real test Ross has had since he came back into the ring and local followers will watch this match with interest. Ross fights Paddy Ricks at Lead, 8. D. This was ‘‘paille maille,” an old French game p'ayed like croquet. Exactly when the billiard table came into use is not clear, but reference is made to it in a manu- script dated 1591, the writer class- ing billiards with dice and cards and “other thriftless games.” Boxing is one of .the world’s old- est sports. The noble art of self- defense was practiced more than thirty centuries ago. It was indeed a strong man’s game. One hero, called Encedalus, used to slay oxen by giving them one blow between the eyes with his fist. Boxing gloves were in use even in those early days; but there was a difference. The earllest glove consisted of a strip of leather, reinforced with lumps of brass and lead, which was wound round the pugilist’s fist. 2 Sib en Fire Mead In the Gilbert islands the men an dwomen speak Uterally a differ- ent language. (Copyright, 1924, Casper Tribune.) NEW YORK, Feb. 13.—The wholesale smashing of swimming records that has taken place in the southern carnival emphasizes the fact that there fs no department of sport in which women have de veloped more rapidly than in the water sport. From a psychological standpoint, all students of the development of the race should hail this increasing skill and speed of our mermaids with the greatest enthusiasm, for swimming answers the moot ques- tion of athletics for women as does no other sport, At the Olympic conference in Paris in 1916 4n the midst of a heated debate as to the entrance of women athletes in international sport events, one of the French delegates took the floor and brought down the house with the assertion: “We do not want our women mus- cular, We want them beautiful.” There are unquestionably certain athletic sports which do tend te make women devotees less attrac- tive. But that is not the case with swimming. Indeed that spért seems to combine all the elements of exer- cise which develop and increase the beauty and attractiveness of its followers.
