M. CROMER. “One half the people of the United States is in California, and the other half is coming.” This ts the slogan of this great and wonderful state. It {s California and the rest of the states that make the United States, but . especially California. Such state and city pride cannot be found anywhere else in the Union,—well we might as well say in the world. ‘The one word which fits every- thing here is the little word “big” Everything is on a big scale. Tho word “large” is too tame, and doesn’t convey our meaning. The city of Los Angeles. has nearly one million inhabitants, and room for many millions more, It has already four hundred square miles within its limits, (20 miles Square) and its limits are being ex: tended almost daily by thousands of realtors. In driving around on? is made to feel that almost everv body is in the real estate business. Real estate men have flocked In here from all the states, and have made millions. The attitude of the clty toward the whole real estate, and new addi- tion business, ts invitingly friendly. Real estate business is encouraged. New additions are welcomed. The city administration stands ready to grant all requests for improvement. When streets are to be paved, the city runs ahead laying water mains and gas pipes. In many cases, additions are also thus improved by the city, and in other large and more extended additions, the city enters into a five-year contract as favorable as possible to the pro- moter. The realtors are recognized as the principal city builders, and the city officials want ‘a large city. So they work hand in hand with the whole real estate business, and are rapidly becoming the metropolis of the world. . And then we must speak of the big churches. And they are big. Here are churches, not one, but many, holding from 2,000 to more than 4,000 people. And these big churches are filled to overflowing. Some require tickets, to be got at the church office, for admittance. Of course they are free. And if one is very anxious to ge a seat he must go a couple hours ahead of time. Some of these churches have turned as many as 2,000 people away from a single service. At almost every service the buildings are crowded and hundreds to thou- sands are turned, This country has great advertis- ing on account of its picture busi- ness. It is worthy of just as much advertising on account of its great churches. This 1s not generally understood. It is possibly the big: gest churclrgoing city in the world. And what about the traffic? Weil that ts one of the greatest problems of the age. It confronts every city. | How can it be handled? We do not ‘know. On our way out’ here, it seemed to us that the whole country was going to California. We passed hundreds, hundreds passed us. But when we got here, we wondered where all the foreign cars were. What had become of them? Only now and then could we see a car with anything but a California tag. And then we remembered that the lamented Mr. Blackmore had told us that he came only as far as Pomona with his car, and left {t there using the street cars for coming in to city But we drove right into the jaws of death,—that is, Mrs. Cromer did, and we have been bucking the traf- fic ever’ since. Only once has a traffic officer said anything to her, and what do you think that was? Well, he hollowed out—"Speed up.” She thought at first he said “hack up". The idea of anyone, even w Californian. telling her to “speed up". He didn't seem to know any+ thing about her. He only saw that she was a tourist and not a Call- fornlan, The speed limit here is 30 miles an hour, and the head lghte tuft be kept on in full power Otherwise they could not ong at all. The traffic officer is not watching a chance to arrest you. All he wants is for you to get ont of the way, and that pretty quick. The city of Los Angeles has only 45,000 ordinances and it doesn’t ox- pect people to know them all. Their own mayor and council don’t know them. So why worry?
