It was defeated by a vote of 36 Republican to 21 Democrats on the ground, as stated by Senator Penrose, then chairman of the finance committee of the senato, that: “The question of earned and un- earned incomes was most exhaus- tively considered by the committee the senate, and by the treasury department a the opinion ws nearly unanimous that any such proposition is impossible of adminis: tration’. “What has produced this extra. ordinary reversal of opinion on the part of the treasury department and the administration? Although a great reduction in the tax burden can be made and the reasonable compensation proposed for the soldiers and sallors can be provided at the same time, the president {s determined that justice shall not be done to the war veterans. Their just claims for consideration are summarily dis missed, but the president ts strong for the maintenance of the Fordney McCumber tariff bill which gives favored trusts, monopolies and com- Dinations in restriant of trade a subsidy estimated at more t three billions of dollars per annum, or twice as much as it will take to pay the soldiers bonus in cash. Dec. 12.— (United Press).—Anyone between the ages of 50 and 70 years, who con- sider themselves at the doddering stage, should take heed from Jvhn Junior Allen, 99, who says he is at the prime of life. Likewise he hopes that he will not live to be 150 years old, although he considers it probable, Two dates stand out in Allen's life. One was his marriage in 1904, after he had lived a bachelor 78 years. The other was two years ago, when he quit chewing tobacco. “I've chewed tobacco all my life, but it's too windy to chew in Ok! homa. The wind blew the juice in my eyes. If I can’t chew like a man I won't chew like a hog,” was his explanation. The styles today and the flapper are all right, Allen says, but recom- mends the old-fashioned hoop-skirt for wartime use. “A hoopskirt saved my Ife during the Civil War. We were runnin’ from the Yanks, actual ly runnin! A woman hid me under her hoop-skirt as she sat sewing and I got away,” Allen said. Naturally, Allen has a formula for longevity. In his case it has work- ed to perfection, but seems rather formidable. Here goes: “Let whisky alone, especially the modern disin- fectants, drink “black” coffee six times a day; eat red onions, fat meat and cornbread.” On this diet, the near-centenarian operates a 30-acre farm with the help of his “girl-wife,” 52. ———__ Geermany’s mercantile fleet has increased from 600,000 tons in June 1920 to 2,600,000 gross tons today. en GIRLS!
