WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 5, 1 BIG SAVING IN FUEL EFFECTED “IN. GENERATING General Electric Com- pany Uses New Boiler To Great Advantage. FEDERAL DRY AGENTS ARE NOT CIVIL OFFICERS SEARCH WAR OMAHA, Neb., Dec. 5.—(Ry The Associated Press.)—Prohibition agents are not civil officers in any strict or constitutional sense, Fed. eral Judge J. W. Woodrough of ha declared today in a written opinion. He also stated they are without lawful authority to serve search warrants. Sustaining a motion by counsel for an Omaha druggist to suppress ; CANT SERVE RANTS, IS RULING “As the United States commis- sioner,” the court ruled, “is limited to his powers so that he cannot lawfully issue search warrants ex- cept to a ‘civil officer’ of the United States and the prohibition officer is clearly not a ‘civil officer’ in any strict or constitutional ‘sense, the real question is whether the term ‘civil officer’ may be given a popular | ana less strict meaning. | “I have before me the opinion of SCHENECTADY, N. Y., Dec. 5.—| evidence of a search warrant, Judge | the learned judges in Michigan and (By The Associated Press.}—Power from mereury vapor, making pos- sible a double vapor power plant in which turbines for generating elec- tricity are driven both by mercury vapor and water vapor from the same fuel source, resulting in a gain of about 50 per cent in power per pound of fuel, is the outstanding achievement of a new boiler per- fected by the General Electric com- pany. The last great step in !mproving the efficiency of manufacturing power was the replacement of the reciprocating engine by the steam turbine. The invention of the mercury vapor boller is regarded as a greater step in tho ‘progress of science. The ern steam turbine !s about 40 ‘per cent more efficient than the best reciprocating engines, but according to W. L. R, Emmett, consulting engineer for the General Electric company and inventor of the new process, the mercury boiler |f is more than 60 per cent more efficient than the best steam turbin>. Mr. Emmett estimates that if the mercury boiler comes up to all ox pectations, it will produce with 35 pounds gauge pressure, when con pared with a steam turbine generat ing plant which uses 200 pounds steam pressure, about 52 per cent more output in electricity per pound of fuel. Faunce, president of Brown unt. versity, and other modernists in re- ligion were characterized as ‘‘Relig- lous Cuckoos," by Dr. Thomas Shielcs of Toronto last night at the thira of the Baptist fundamentalist meetings. Dr. Shields, head of the Baptist Bible union, had previously stated that the confirming of a degree by America, Eline’s is most efficient and olate factory in world. is produced 2 Almost at Eline’s back door a Baptist university on Dr. Faunce was a “disgrace to the Baptist de- nomination.” Dr. Faunce’s reply that the fundamentalists were likely to s'ough off the main body of the Baptists and form another denomi- nation brought forth the assertion last night from Dr. Shields that the union would not get out of the de nomination. The modernists, he as- be Casper Dally Cridune werted, were just waiting for his group in the demonation “to build} colleges and schools, pay off the debts and then get out.” “We will do nothing of the sort,” Dr. Shields dec'ared. “The funda- mental'sts throw down the gauntlet to Dr. Faunce and all of his kind.
