PACE TWO OR. J. M CROMER WRITES OF AUTOMOBILE JOURNEY TO THE PACIFIC COAST; DESERT REGION CROSSED By J. M. CROMER No one can realize thA vastness of our public domain as a country. We must study it by states, and even by counties, to become at all inform- ed of the broad superficial areas, and the varied and wonderful resources. ‘We are a nation of empires, each state having within itself such boundless resources as, in compari- son with many countries of the world, to become entitled to such a claim. In our former letter we spoke rather disparagingly of the great and Ittle known state of New Mext- co. But we did nct mean !t as such. ‘We meant only that so long as New Mexico was dominated by the spirit of a foreign country, and an almost dead civilization, there could be but little hope for tts improvement or advancement. But it is a very wonderful state. ret dushes and undergrowth much like our own sage brush. All Now Maxtoo needs ts water and modern cultivation. It has the soil, and a matchless cilmate, and tt has the wnter, in {ts lakes and the won- erful Rio Grande. Arizona also has tte share of water, The great river Glty Gioia) flows lazily and idly Gown into the Colorado at Yuma, AM theno arid states need is the inventive and enterprising genius of northern engineers and capite§ to turn these rivers Into a very mirécle ef productivity, making this now barren country the granary of the cannot speak tn terms com- prehensive and colossal enough to ive an adequate idea of the pos- sibilities of these southern empires. It requires the superlative degree in all that can be sald about them, for to the tourist they seem almost too great for ordinary consideration. Tt 1s simply {mpossible to realize the possibilities of these great areas. ‘This leads us to speak a little more definitely about the great de- sert, called when a school boy, “The Great American Desert/’ by the geographers of that day. ‘We have no Goubt at all but that in this term was then included many of our western states in addition to those we have mentioned such as Nevada, and possibly western Kan- sas and Nebraska, an@ much of Wyoming. But this {dea of 2 great American desert has been reduced to almost insignificant proportions. ‘A few hours ride over a plank roa takes one across this awful appearing desert. Soon one comes up out of the submerged waste, and reaches a table land as level as a floor for scores of miles, upon much of which vegetation is grow- ing, and which the already great and wonderful state of California will turn into the greatest cotton fields and fruit groves in all the world. In vietng with each other tell- ing of possible great enterprises, one of my Casper friends suggested the building of an ocean to ocean canal, ¢ ng by way of Casper, upon which the great giants of the deep should pass bearing their world cargoes of wealth, Well, it isn't an impossibility. American engineering backed by American wealth can do it. But another tring may be done also, The great waters of the ocean may be put through a system of 5 oration, whereby the would be supplied with salt forever, and the by-product of pure evaporated water could be made to flood all these desert lands and change them Into tnexhaustible pro- ductivity. These thoughts are not out of dream One can see more things possible with his natural eyes in this great land of ours, than even to Munchausen. an Knights. is forced upon the @, in this day of such velations of human that 1s, that we the real achleve- things. ting under the hallow- s of another Thanks- ¢. we may do two © more intelli things it suggest to the devout mind but that we should be pre-eminen moral and spiritual things, and for mrlate ideas and ideals of x the fashion of our ities are ours for the beginning. This is manifest more and more . We recently heard an 1} lustration to our purpose here from the football field. ‘The sides were well matched. They were tied in score. It was the finish- ing of the game. The one side got the bail within a few Inches of the score. The sides were locked in struggle. Everybody expected a great play. But the one with the ball did not do what everybody thought he would do. He changed Special Prices All Cut Flowers THURSDAY The Flower Shoppe 542 South Center Phone 2574 the play, fumblea the ball and lost the game. This will serve as an illustration of the game of nations. Napoleon came almost to the scratch line of a world victory. He fumbled the ball, tho he croesed the Alps, and failed, The Kaiser forced hig-way within the shadow of the French capital, and was ready to score, when in face of the American host he fumbled the ball and failed. Just here, at the goal of world leadership the United States stands ready to score for God, and hu- manity, !n world leadership. My God, what destinies hang upon this nation now. What if we should fumble the ball? ACTOR DIES ON COAST LOS ENGELES, Dec, §.—Herbert Standing, well known actor, dled at his home early this morning follow- ing an illness of five weeks. He was 77 years old. He is survived by a widow, two daughters and five sons, Wyndham and Herbert, Jr., who are in New York, and Guy, Percy and Aubrey Standing, now in London. All are engaged in theatrica! work, with the exception of one daughter. MAN GIVEN RELEASE ON ASSAULT CHARGE Frank Kaiser who was arrested several days ago on a charge of as. saulting a woman with a knife was dismissed by Judge Murray last night. The magistrate held that there was insufficient evidence. sos Watch for the date. A Packard coupe is going to be given away at Lloyd's. IF BACK HURTS BEGIN ON SALTS Flush Your Kidneys Occa- sionally by Drinking Quarts of Good Water No man or woman can make a mistake by flushing the kidneys oc- ecasionally, says a well-known authoritv. Too much rich food creates &cids which clog the kidney pores so that they sluggishly filter or strain only part of the waste and poisons from the blood, Then you get sick, Rheumatism, headaches, liver trouble, nervousness, constipa- tion, dizziness, sleeplessness, bladder disorders often come from sluggish kidneys. The moment you feel a dull ache in kidneys or your back hurts, or if the urine is cloudy, offenstye, full of sediment, irregular of passage, or attended by a sensation of scalding, begin to drink soft water in quanti- ties; also get about four ounces of Jad Salts from any reliable phar- macy and take a tablespoonful in a glass of water before breakfast for a few days and your kidneys may then act fine. This famous saits is made from the acid of grapes and lemon juice, combined with lithia, and has been used for years to help flush clogged kidneys and etimulate them to ac- tivity, also to help neutralize the acids in the system so they no Iong- er cause irritation, thus often re- Heving bladder disorders, cad Salts is inexpensive and can- nct injure; makes a delightful ef- farvescent Ithia-water drink, which everyone can take now and then to help keep the kidneys clean and the hood pure, thereby often preventing serious kidney complications, By all means have your physician ex urine your kidneys at least twice a year.—Advertisement.
