Perfect Ignition Makes Engine Start Easier and Run Better. In a very few weeks the cold weather will be here, and if you in- tend driving your car during the winter, it will pay you to check up the condition of the Ignition System | to make certain that it is in g00d/moving the breaker arm in and out order before the cold weather sets | with the tip of the finger to see that in. During the warm weather the | points into firm contagt. gasoline vaporizes very easily, and|pears to be weak, then it will be ‘a weak thin spark will fire the mix- ture in the cylinders, but when the weather is cold, the mixture taken into the cylinders is not properly / vaporized until the engine becomes \ warm, and a weak spark finds it very difficult to fire the poorly vaporized mixture and start the engine. Tt.is not a difficult operation to put the Ignition in first-class order. First, examine all wires leading fromthe spark plugs to the Dis- tributor Head, to see that the rub- ber covering or insulation on the wires has not rubbed through at any point. If you notice the wire is chafing or rubbing at any point, wrap three or four turns of insulat- ing tape around the part that shows signs of rubbing, or better still, fit a new. wire. : If the wiring 1s tn good order, then remove the Distributor Head. If the Distributor has rubbing con- tacts, you will find a series of flat brass segments moulded into the head. See that these contacts are bright and clean, and that the track the Distributor brush runs on {s smooth. Rub a little vasoline on the track and polish it with a rag. If the Distributor is of the “jump spark” type, you will find “a series of wire pins sticking up around the inside of the head. Brighten the spot on the pin you notice the spark jumps to with a piece of fine sand papers PAvhen you take off the Distributor Head, you will notice the Distributor or Rotor Arm, Remove it by pull- ing off: If the Distributor has flat metal ;segments, there will be a small carbon or metal brush on the Aym: Examine to see that it moves fveely in its guide and is not stick- ing, and that the spring underneath the bgush ts strong enough to press it inté- firm contact with the brass segments in the Distributor Head. The Contact Breaker is the next patt to examine. Turn the engine over slowly, until you see the Con. Points close, then examine to hat they come together square- y. Now turn the engine over slow- ly again. unt the points open at their widest gap. Most Points are made from Contact Tungsten metal, which is hard to touch with a file and should be faced up off an oil stone. If you do not happen to possess a stone, then)pro- cure one of the magneto files made specially for trimming up Contact Points. It is a difficult operation for an amateur to file the faces of the Contact Points so.that they will 2 so file them so be exactly parallel, that the fa: of the points are VERY SLIGHTLY rounded. This will insure & good contact, If the points are burned or worn down very much, be careful to note, after you have dressed them up, that there is enough Tungsten or plati num left on the points to make a good contact. If they are worn down so that the steel to which the point is attached shows through, new points will haye to be fitted. Now, with the points held open at their widest point, test the gap between them. * ‘This varies slightly on different makes of Ignition Sys- tems, but is generally just about the thickness of a Government postal. Consult the instructions issued by the manufacturer of the Ignition System used on your car, to find out what the exact gap should be and if possible use the special gap gauge ho furnishes, to set the gap. If the points require adjusting, first loosen the lock-nut, then the adjusting screw can be screwed in and out, enabling you to set tho proper gap between the points. v’/Wwhen you have the correct gap. tighten the locking nut, then test the gap again to make sure the adjustment did not shift when you tightened the locking nut. Now go over all connections on the Coil and Distributor to see that they are clean and tight. An entirely, new performance record for an automobile will be at- tempted when “Cannonball” Baker, noted race driver and the holder of several score of records, will leave New York, October 8, in a new Oldsmobile Six to drive across the continent to Los Angeles in high gear. In fact, “high” will be the only gear in the car, low, second and reverse gears having been removed. A score or more of automobiles have made cross country runs, either for speed, endurance or econ- omy but none have yet attempted the run in high gear. During the last year, however, the Oldsmobile four has broken many hill climbing records and the new six is designed to moet the same performance rec- ords, and Baker asserts that the car will climb all the mountains easily. Prior to leavin, the car will be motor transportation. 125 to 137 N. Center inspected by New York newspaper- men who will certify that the car carries nothing but high gear in the transmission and they will offictally seal it, to prevent tampering. A letter certifying this will be carried on the trip across country, and in San Francisco newspapermen will open the gear case to see that it has not been changed. A stock touring car will be used, with standard rear axle, standard transmission, engine, carburetor and every other part. The factory asserts that every part has been checked in the presence of witnesses to prove that no special equipment was included. The route from New York will lead to Philadelphia, Cumberland. Md., Uniontown, Pa., Wheeling, W. Va., crossing the Cumberland moun- tains. It will then be through Columbus, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Kansas City, Dodge City, Raton Pass, Santa Fe, Albuquerque, Flag staff, Barstow, Calif, and Los Angeles.
