While these figures may seem large to those unfamiliar with the territory to be served, they are considered very conservative by those who have made a study of the situa- tion. The gas resources of the Baxter Basin field have been sufficiently developed to insure not only the amount cf gas required by the cities in this section of the inter-mountain country, but a quantity sufficient to supply ten times the number of con- sumers. Owing to the extreme gas pressures encountered in the gas sands, none of the wells in the Baxter Basin field have been drilled below the sands. ‘This condition is not the result of lack of confidence in the production of oil in the lower sands, but is en- tirely a recognition of the dangerous element which must be overcome. Every known ‘precaution is being taken at the wells to prevent acci- dents and the drilling must of neces- sity be-very slow. ing under the ground at a later date. The es- timates of consumption in Rock Springs are being made on a price about equal to the cost of coal to the consumer, but it is thought that this cost will be reduced somewhat after the first year, when the consumption can be accurately calculated.
