‘ep FRIDAY, MAY 18, 1923. FIGHT AGAINGT Uo. CONTROL OF GOAL URGED Former Governor of West Virginia Says Move- ment Is Pending. NEW YORK, May 18, — John J. Cornwell, former governor of West Virginia today urged the National Association of Manufacturers to take a definite step against national-\ ization of coal. “Whether the miners’ organization wil make an iSsue, at the expiration of the present contract, of the six hour day and five day week, remains to be seen,” he said. “I do feel cer- tain, however, that sooner or later the miners’ organization will make an issue of the nationalization of the coal mines and will fight it out with a strike. “Hence, whatever our troubles may “ be with respect to the fuel supply, it seems to me that we shou'd set our faces sternly against yelding to this demand, which will be made within the next few years and which will have to be faced and fought.” If the’miners and other organized labor groups carry their fight suc- cessfully through congress he assert- ed, the labor groups also would be powerful enough to fix thelr own rates of pay and determine thelr own working conditions. Mr. Cornwell said he believed that the large consumers could ald in stabilizing distribution if they were willing and able to store a larger quantity of toal than they ordin- arily do and thus stretch coal pro- duction over the entire year. BIG ATTRACTION BOOKED FOR COLUMBIA, 16 SAID ‘What promises to be the musical event of the year is the engagement of the “Billy Maine” company of 25 people which opens an indefinite en- gagement at the Columbia Sunday. Newspaper critics from all over the country herald it as the brightest, breeziest and best dressed musical show on the road today. Tha gowns worn by the different members of the company are exquisite crea- tions of the Parisienne art. The same costumes were seized by the U. 5. customs collector et the port of entry and were being held at the valuation of ten thousand dollars upon which they expected to collect duty, but as/ they were entered at Paris as “tools of trade” they were allowed to enter duty free. Many Sunday. Billy Maine himself will be seen in the character of “Private Goldbrick”’ and the critics say the manner In which he extracts the laugh is sim- ply astounding. The company car- ries a number of well known vaude- ville artists and there will be no lack of variety in any of thetr perform: ances. E There will be continuous shows Sunday and Manager Harris urges those who can to attend the after- noon performances. Car Shortage Is Possibility With Santa Fe CHICAGO, May 18.—Inquiries are being received by. the Atchison, To- peka and Santa Fe raflroad whether there will be sufficient cars to handle the heavy business this year, Presi- dent W. B, Storey said. “We hope to have them,” he said, “but our ability to furnish cars de- pends not only on our own efforts but on the ability of all the roads in the United States to function properly. Since January 1, nearly ten per cent more cars of commer- clal freight have been handled than in the correspondingg ‘months of 1920, the record year. In the same months the car shortage has been reduced by one-half.
