REACH CRISIS IN RUHR. 22 DEAD, BO HURT Easter In Germany’s Indus- » trial Region Will Be Day of Nervousness and Fear BY CARL D. GROAT United Press ff Correspondent. BERLIN, March 31—The Ruhr has bad its baptism of fire and tonight, with 22 lying dead and 60 injured, advices from the vatley showed that the cris’s in the French occupation had arrived. Easter in Germany’s industrial re- gion will be a day of nervousness and fear—with no telling at what mo- ment the ancient hatred of Prussian for Frenchman and Frenchman for Prussian will flame up, Of the 22 who died, 11 were killed when French machine guns opened fire on workmen at the great Krupp piant, thus punishing them for at- tempting to resist seizure of automo- biles. Most of the injuries occurred at the same time. One volley from the machine guns and the advancing crowd of workers was scattered. The other casualties were caused by a col lis'on between trains manned by French crews near Gero'stein. Eleven ~s died, including six Germans. The affair at Krupps was the most serious of the occupation, When the French arrived to confiseate the automobiles, a factory sien sounded the workers came out im great sses to resist. Krupp offic’als orderéd the sol- diers to leave but they refused. The’ officers went into conference with the officials and then agreed to re- call the troops as soon as the crowd dispersed. While the throng was still milling around the gates, something . hap- pened. Some reports say a stick was thrown at the French. At,any rate, the result was a burst of fire from the machine guns. ‘The French officers had to wait un- til the crowd was cleared away be- fore leaving the factory, as otherwise they probab'y would have been mobbed. This was the first time the French had ever molested the Krupp worke. An investigation js being made to ascertain whether the train wreck was caused by sabotage. French today charged they had dis- covered a new. type of super-subma- rine under construction at the Benz works. Officials of the plant deny !t, but the French named this the reason’ for extending occupation of Mannheim, se'zing the Benz works. the Hilda school and part of the Eyvangelican orphanage. mi PARIS, March 31.—The Freneh an- nouncement of the trouble a the Krupp works in. Essen today says five or six workers were killed When machine guns were turned) on the crowd, and {hat the soldiers acte® in self-defense. They had gone to the works to re qu’sition automobiles when factary whistles blew the alarm and. the workers saliied out to attack them. Stonts were thrown at the soldifrs who retreated to a garage. e steam was turned on them through a hose and they opened fire. Tate a mob attacked two French enginetrs in an automobile, wounding one ise yerly and one slightly Tonight armored cars and tarjks patroiied the streets around the Krupp works. | Editor Sworn in As President U.S. Commissi WASHINGTON, March 31,—¥Wil- fam C.
