Casper Sunvap gporning Tribune Announcement Little Talks on Shoe Repairing by the Shoe Repairers of Casper If you wanted to build a house, you would not go to a man who did not follow the carpenter trade, would you? He might be able to saw a board, but would he be able to build a house? Modern shoe repairing is one of the largest businesses in the country today. Millions of dollars are tied up in ma- chinery and equipment and the shoe repair bill of the na- tion runs over‘a hundred million dollars each year. The old time shoemaker was willing to sit in a dark cor- ner on a hard bench and, humped and bent, toil for twelve or fifteen hours a day for a mere pittance--just enough to pay for a couple of meals a day, and possibly a drink or two. He was looked upon with disgust, was a social out- cast and was regarded as a hopeless drudge and ignoramus. He took no part in the business life of the community--and was not expected to. Because of this ostracism young men would not enter the industry nor attempt tolearnthe business. Shoe makers were laughed at and called foolish. The term, “cobbler,” one of scorn and disdain, was ap- plied to the shoemaker. Today there are no young men learning the shoemaking trade. True, there are machine men. But they cannot do the finer repairing. Because of this past antipathy to an honorable trade, the young Amer- ican hesitates to enter it. As a result, the trade is flooded with the refuse of Southeastern Europe.
