BY IRWIN When a team ranking eighth in team batting hangs up a ng that of the batting leaders fif- mark equalling or teen, sixteen or eighteen years have been many individual batting feats that would have in One Game with Tie M. HOWE ago it follows that there must been startling in the days when Chesbro, Bender, Plank, Waddell, Joss, White, Young, ers were matching skill with the heavy hitters of their time. This past season the Boston Red Sox, eighth in team batting, hit 263, the exact mark attained by Cleveland in 1904, three points below that of Detroit in 1907, and eight points higher than Cleveland in 1905, these teams being batting leaders for those years. Below is given a table of the best pertormances of the players who made the present plethoric records possible. Seven p'ayers clouted five safe drives, in as many times at bat, in single game; Ty Cobb pulling this trick three times, while on another occasion he grabbed five hits in six times up. Besides Cobb, those who made five hits in one game while facing the pitcher but five times, were Mostil, Chicago, Gardner and J. Sewell, Cleveland, Rigney, Detroit, Baker, New York, and Goslin, Wash- ington. It will be noted that four of the seven are youngsters, Joe Sewell being the veteran of the quarter with a little more than two years of ser- vice. Lawton Witt, Sam Rice and Leon Goslin also kept company with Walsh and other famous hurl- the manager of the Tygers by emash- ing on one other occasion each, five safe blows in six times at bat. ‘Pwelve men hit for a total of ten or more bases in a single game, Ken. Williams, Ed, Miller and Ruth being tied for top honors, (12 bases). Wil- ams set his record by walloping three home runs off two young Wh! Sox pitchers; Miller made a singl a triple and two homers in a game against Cleveland with Coveleskic, Keefe and Bagby on the mound, while Ruth pounded two home runs and two doubles on September 11, as a quartet of Connie Mack’s hurlers came and went. ‘ Ray Schalk set a peculiar record June 27 in a Detroit contest in which Ehmke, and Cole divided the mound duty equally. The White Sox catcher in four appearances at the plate ham- mered a single, a double, a three-base hit and sent one over the fence good for one round trip. This record was equalled by R. Meusel on July 3. Sullivan and Eckert pitched for the Athletics. In the period extending from July 27 to September 11, George Sisler set a new American League record for batting safely in consecutive games.
