The writer has observed this same porous, vug like structure in calcite that was deposited in oll and gas wells near Butler, Pa. Evidence that the escape of small Proportions of the gas and ol] has con- tinued practically to the present time of numerous seepages in the Salt Creek field. The spotted character of the Production, together with the phenom- enally high initial rates of production of some of the wells tapping fault zones in the second Wal! Milis, petroleum technologist of the bureau of mines, has called attention to important relations that faulting bears to the migration and accumula- tion of o!] and gas. It has been point- ed out that favorably situated parts of of! and gas bearing sands have been enriched by migration and seg- regation incident to faulting, The «s- cape of water through natural pase- ages such fault fissures has in- duee€ wide spread hydraulic currents through the beds toward these points of danished pressure and these wa- ter currents, plus buoyancy, have con- tributed largely toward the migration of ofl to favorable rock entrapments tn the vicinity of the faults. The pro- Pulsive force of expanding gas has been one of the contributing causes for the hydraulic currents. Paradoxical as it may seem, the escape of gas with entrained o') through fissures has been an impor- tant factor in the migration and nc- cumulation of of] in many faulted areas. Compressed gas in the propul- ive force by which ofl /generally Moves to producing wells. It is also one of the propulsive forces by wh'ch ofl has moved with or even ahead of water under conditions of differential presure brought about by faulting. The concomitant formation of gas and ofl, together with the diffuston of absorbed gas under high pressure throughout the underground water and disseminated ofl are assumed to have precesded the processes herein outlined and have made them possible. Absorbed gas tends to lower the vis coatty as well as the specific gravity of the off, especially where the ab- sorbed gas expends suffictently to form minute bubbles within the /o'l Again, under the propulsive force of water currents, alone, the oll tends to r, as emplitied by the formation of wa. ing wells, but are cons'derable propor- tionsrof ranidly expanding gas, the oll ‘w propelled mhend of the water.
