SALES OF NEW-PACKARD HIT RECORD IN FIRST 10 DAYS A he Casrer Dail Tribune UNI | CLAIRE FAVORED P00 oF raosrniy RETURN SEEN WB BUSESS Featured at Annual Motor Show Held at Marshall Field This Year. The herdline feature of Marshal) Field and company’s eighth annual motor show, held in their colossal building. Chicago, was the Wills Sainte Claire. This is a spring event, the opening of the motoring season proper, and cinsists of a remarkable exihibit of all the new and approved accessories and appliances pertaining to motor cars. One motor cor manufacturer is invited to exhibit his engine and only one. No other cars are shown. The cars. One motor care manufacturer is tional approval and be recognized as a distinct advance in design and en- gineering. In the pest, two foreign cars, Peaugot and Renault, and the Cadillac have been invited to Marshall eld and company to exhibit. This official sanction by Marshall Field is virtually public acceptance of the Wills Sainte Claire into a very select group of the world's fine mo- tor cars. A special cut-out power plant of the Wills Sainte Claire was shown’ and lectures on the engineering and me- tallurgical advances of the car were given all week by Mr. E. Philip Mer- rill, satcs department of C. H. Wills and company. It is reported that the Wills Sainte Claire attracted all week more attention than any car that has ever been exhibited at this motor show. TIRE GENERATES * INJURIOUS HEAT Service Is Made Possible Through Proper Inflation to Reduce Warmth. ‘The heat that is noticeable in a tire after it has been run for a few hours, is generated by the tire itself, due to flexing and bending of fabric and rub. ber. The amount of heat depends up. on the rapidity and extent of this ac tion, An over-loaded or an utdler-in flated tire heats more rapidly than a properly inflated and properly loaded tire. Similarly, an old tire, due to weakness, is more susceptible to this eat producing action than a new tire. The strength factor built into the ‘standard pneumatic tires of today, is far above what the tire is ever called ‘upon to deliver, except under most ex inary <ircumstanges. Experi- mental tests have shown that in order to blow out a new first class tire by fdditional air pressure, it is necessary to exert a force of over 30 times the Yegular recommended pressure. The current statement of business by the Packard Motor Car company indicates a new record in the pro- @uction of high grade motor cars. According to figures furnished by the distribution manager of Packard actual consumer sales of the new Single Six in the ten days follow- ing the announcement of this lat- est Packard product, exceeded $5,- 700,000. Gross sales of Packard Single Sixes, Twin Sixes and trucks for the period were over $3,250,000. ‘This is the largest’ volume of busi- ness ever done by the Paskard com- pany in a similar time, and is in- dicative of the buying interest which brought nearly 50,000 people into Packard salesrooms through- out the country in the week follow- ing the new Single Six announce- ment. “The extraordinary spring de- mand would fully justify a Packard production at this time of 2,500 cars a month,” said H. H. Hills, vice president of distribution. “Such vol- ume is, of course, out of the ques- tion in the building of fine cars, but the present flow of ordefs cui d only be satisfied by that output. “All Singie Six production for the next few months is heavily over- sold. We entered May 450 orders behind the Twin Six demand. In fact, all Twin Six production sor May and most of June is already teken, Trucks show a very heavy increase over this period of 1921, and this in spite of the fact that all Packard truck production is in sizes of two tons and upward. “One of the astonishing features of the heavy spring buying is the great demani for closed cars. Ac- tual orders by dealers’ customers for new Single Sixes show 42 per cent of specifications for closed cars. Distributors’ schedules indi- cate that we shall have to produce 70 per cent closed cars during the “This is an extraordinary condi- tion for spring, when the demand for closed cars is supposed to be at low level. The present popularity of Single Six closed types has nec- essitated 2 large increase tn that di- vision of Packard production. “In all departments. Packar plants are rapidly working up to capacity output. ' far as a blow-out is concerned, for a Feduction’ of air pressure before going out on long runs or during hot days. The maximum increase in air pres: eure that could be expected, under any condition, would not exceed 15 pounds—the average would not be greater than 6 pounds. 5 crease In pressure will not blow out the casing. ‘The motorist should not concern himscif over making inflation allow- ances for changes in temperature. Without a single exception, every communication with the has been a request for increased shipments, and advanced schedules. “Titre is, in this new Packard record, also every evidence of per- manency. Several of the largest Packard distributors have tendered firm orders, backed by payment in full, for quantities varying from 1,000 to 2,000 cars for delivery dur- ing the next twelve months.
