WEDNESDAY, MAY 10, 1922. ———— wie >| THE TRIB VON ELM WILL DEFEND TITLE Trans-Mississippi Expected to Enter Golf Play This Year. LOCAL RULES REDUCING PENALTIES FOR LOSING . BALL GIVEN SANCTION CHICAGO, May 10. — Written ; Champion | sxction of local rules for golf that will permit of reducing the penal- ties for lost ball and ball out of bounds ss well as some other con- ' cemstons without formally violating the rules of the Royal and Ancient Golf club of St. Andrews has been sent out to clubs by the United association. Rule 22 provides that when a ball is lost (cannot be found in five min- utes of search) the player shall go back and lose not only the ‘distance but also a penalty stroke, playing ; three from the tee, if his drive was lost. It was attempted by the U, S. G. A. to get this penalty stroke remitted by St. Andrews but the committee instead got a penalty stroke added to the loss of distance Previousty assessed under rule 23 for a ball driven out of bounds. The penalty stroke in both cases now may be remitted under local rules, so that the outcry that followed the jadding of a penalty | of bounds can now be stilled RING STARS ON OMAHA, Neb., May 10.—George Von Him, of Salt Lake City, winner of last year’s tournament, is expected to de- tend is title when the Trans-Missis- sippi golf tournament is played at the County club course here the week of July 10, according to announcement by Francis Gaines, secretary.
