One of the busiest months in the his- tory of the local chapter of the Red Ccoss has just been completed accord- ing to reports which have been sub- mitted to the county commissioners by Mrs. Kittie B. Payne, secretary. Both of the major departments of Red Cross work, caring for ascorvice men and their families and civilian relief say a great increase during the past month. It is a notable fact also that civilian relief demands are grow: ing until they have far eclipsed the velief work which ex-soldiers and their families require. In general business also the work of the office increased during the month. Over 160 letters were written, 540 persons were interviewed in the the office and advised and new relief cases numberir; 61 were filed. For ex-service men's relief 192 ap- plicatants were interviewed; three fam- 132 letters wers written in behalf of the Servico men to secure governmental assistance or other relief and five wires were sent to secure immediate relief when needed. In civilian relief departments 35 new families were added to the list during the past month out of 81 families who either applied or were reported for as. sistance. Families needed attention were visited and assistance given in 119 cases. Over 350 interviews of in- dividuals in this department were held at the offices. The report especially calls attention to the co-operation given the Red Cross in the civilian relief by the Wel fare club. One of the important undertakings in the ctvil relief department was con- tained in the free employment bureau in which 10 men were placed on jobs. five others placed who refused to ac- cept the work and the filing of appli- cations of approximately 50 persons for work. The children’s department {n which delinquents and abused or neglected ehildren are properly handled func- tioned with beneficial results during the month.
