RAILROAD GOAL THIEVES SPENDING TERM IN JAIL CHEYENNE, Wyo., Jan. 13.—V7il- arn Weatherly and Pete Palmido, resi- dents cn Sherman hill, between Chey- enne and Laramie, conceived a method of obtaining something for nothing ‘vy boarding Union Pacific trains on Sher- man hill, throwing off huge chunks of coal and then picking the chunks up and transporting them away in trucks, but the system in the final analysis is proving both expensive and humiliating to the pafr. Arraigned in the justice court here on a charge of 25,| petit larceny, they were fined $30 each and sentenced to serve 30 days in fail. The Union Pacific, operatives of its Police department say, is losing about $1,000 daily on shrinkage of coal ship- ments in transits and a considerable Portion of this loss fs attributed to thefts such as that of which Palmido and Weatherly were convicted. ~~ Public Funerals Of Diphtheria Victims Will Be Prohibited H, Wyo., Jan. 13—The ays will promulgate regula r funerals of victims of diph- has caused deaths in es of the state recently. ations will forbid public fun- and will pro. rtaking establishment the coffin sk ent from that occupied Home W anted For Unclaimed Baby © Wyo- mer of child and G. Loy chief petroleum chem- ist for the Standard O11 company at the refineries in Casper has joined the chemical forces of the bureau of mines in an advisory capacity to assist in working out the possibilities of shale in Colorado and Wyoming, ac. cording to announcements recently made. Dr. Loy and other noted chemists of this district have been added to the bureau of mines forces for the pur- pose of advising on the possibilities of shale, experiments on which are now being conducted at the University of Colorado. He and the other chemists will meet at Boulder at regular inter- vals to inspect the experiments com- pleted and to outline new work. A one barrel still has been installed at Bould- er for the experimental work. According to investigations and sur- tains enough oll to operate the refin- years, At the Boulder laboratory, work on the elementary analysis of oil shale is being continued with the standard Colorado shale. Some work was re- cently done’ with a sample of very rich ofl shale obtained from the south- ern side of the Grand valley, Colorado. In connection with this study many tests are being made with the small assay retorts, The bench of assay re- torts has been soinewhat remodeled, equipment being installed which in- sures more definite control of retort- ing conditions, In all future runs with these retorts the permanent gases ‘will be scrubbed and the amount of scrub- ber naptha estimated. Gas samples from each series of runs will also be taken in an attempt to correlate the results of assay retorting tests with the elementary analysis of the shales The value of the assay retorts has again been shown in that the best oil thus far produced from the standard Colorado shales has been mado with these retorts. = ———$ STOCKMEN’S LOAN TO RAISE CAPITAL AGAIN CHEYENNE, Jan. 13.—The capital stock of the Wyoming Stockmen’s Loan company, the Wyoming agency of the War Finance corporation, is to be increased to $1,500,000 at a meet- ing of the stockholders which is to be called soon, The present capital- ization is $1,000,000.
