D., Oct, 27—A new to the murder of Father A. B. o Bishop J. J. Lawler of Lead, where Father Belknap lived, and asked the priest to goto the bedside of a man Who was said to be dying. Miller {s the only man known to have seen the priest ‘after the latter left Bishop Lawler’s residence on the errand of mercy which -resulted in Father Belknap's. death. Miller told the police he had just got off shift at the mine and was "| walking to hia home in Bender Park, about a quarter of a mile from the scene of the murder when he was passed on Main street by a manwalk- Ing very fast. “Miller sald he followed along after the man and after he had gone two or three blocks the man for Miller and introduced him- self as Father Belknap. The priest was alone according to Miller. Miller sald the priest told him he was on his way to answer a sick call. ‘The priest asked Miller, the latter told the police, where a certain fam- fly lived in Bender Park, a suburb of Lead, telling Miller he thought their residence was near the oll tanks of the Standard Off company, near the city Units. Miller said he accompanied the priest to a point near where Fa- thelr Belknap was going, gave ‘hin instructions how to reach the home and bade him good night. The spot where Miller left the priest, he said, Was at the top of the, hill leading down to a small settlement known as “Poor Man's Gulch.” The priest's body was found near this place. Mil- ler told the police after leaving Fa- ther Belknap he went to his own home and fetired. He said he did not hear the Shots which preceded the leath of the priest. Questioned by Deputy Sheriff War- ren Owen, Miller sala he could not remember the name of the man who Father Belknap had told him had called at the Mshop's home and asked the priest to make the sick call. Miller said that beforo he parted company with the priest, Father Belk- hap told him bomeone had attempted ‘© steal his automobile during the aight. ‘The ‘priest said he had heard someone in his garage, according to| Miller, and declared when he - at- empted to start the machine for the ourney to the sick man’s home the car would not work. ‘The priest ex- slained, Miller said, that he had there- fore been compelled to make the jour- ney on foot. After» talking with. Miller, authorl- tles believe the murderer after call: ing at the bishép's residence and ar- ranging for Father Belknap to mike the call on the alleged dying man, may have hurried to:the spot on Poor Man's Guich highway and waited for the coming of his’ victim. It was pointed out, also, however, that the nan who went to the bishop's home night have been only a confederate ‘Sf the murderer who sent the priest m his journey knowing ‘he would be met by the murderer at the lonely spot on the road where the crime was committed. Miller will tell his story at the coro- rver's inquest, which has again been postponed and now fs scheduled to start tomorrow afternoon. Several persons I'ving near where the body was found also have been summoned to testify. ‘ Funeral services for Father Belk- nap, at which Bishop Lawler will of- ficiate, will be held in St. Patrick's cathedral here at 10 o'clock Saturday morning. Priests of many parishes in the Black Hills will take part in the funeral mass.
