sper Daily Cribune FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 30, 1921 FIGHT. AGAINST RUSSIN RELIEE 6 CHARGED IN GENEVA SPEECH | he slept Refusal. of Assembly to * Issue World Appeal Draws Fire of Commit- tee Leader GENEVA, Sept. 80—(By The Associated Press.) —/| Charges that a systematic | campaign was being waged to} put obstructions in the way of | international relief for Russia | by interests which had poll jects in view were made in bir Dr. Fridtjot Nanse, high commissioner of tho international committee for Russian relief. Dr. Nansen’s charges were made in & speech which he delivered after the aasembly had decided, on a report pre- mented by Delegate Motta of Switzer: land, that the league could not under- take an appeal to the nations of the ‘world for funds to feed Russia. Mr. Nansen, aroused by this ac- tion, made a lengthy appeal to the sembly in behalf of Russian relief. He claimed there. had been misrepresen- tation to some sections of the press re- garding his plans for the relief. The whole situation was being systemati- cally misrepresented, he declared, and it was perfectly. evident that this campaign came from some central source from someone who had a poltt!- eal interest in obstructing Russian re- Net. Dr. Nansen said he thought this gampaign was due to fear in some Quarters that relief for Russia would strengthen the soviet government. He id not think such would be the case, but even ff it should be, he asked “is that any reason for allowing 20,000,- 900 persons to starve?” Dr. Nansen defended the agree ment he had made in Moscow with ths Soviet government for joint supervis- fon of relief work.
