PAGE TEN FABRIG BILL TO °E REVIVED IN NEW CONGRESS Wool Growers Not Discouraged by Defeat of Measure, Will Resurrect New One to Pro- tect Industry acct CHICAGO, April 4.;‘Tho the orig- inal truth in fabric bill, which was de- signed to compel textile manufactur- ers to stamp their cloth with its con- tent of virgin wool end of shoddy, ceased to exist when the last con- gress adjourned; I wish to assure the friends and foes Of the measure that its advocates haveonly just begun to fight.” This statement was made today by Howard E. Greene, secretary of the National Sheep and Wool Bureau of America, No. 23 East Jackson boule- vard, Chicago. The bureau has been acting as the leader of the trxin in fabric campaign. Mr. Groewue con- tinued: “Senator Arthur Capper of Kansas and Representative Burton L. French of Idaho have’ :nade all arrangements to re-introduce the truth in fabric bill immediately after congress assembles and both are determined to use their utmost ability to force the measure thru before the session ends. “It is scarcely 15 months since thc original truth in fabric bill was intro- duced into congress. Aided by their knowledge of the pure food law, the people of the nation were prepared to understand the need for the com- pulsory labeling of cloth and this ac- counts for the hold which the truth in fabric issue has already secured. “On the eve of tis re-introduction, the truth in fabric bill has.the indorse- ment of at least 259 organizations, many of them national in scope, with memberships aggregating millions. They include practically every farm and stock organization in the land, dozens of chambers of commerce, civic, social, labor and women’s clubs and associations and, last but not least, five state legislatures. Wyoming, America’s greatest wool state and the state which first passed a pure food law, has been the first to pass a truth in fabric law. This goes into effect im June. Similar measures, based on the national bill, are before a dozen state legislatures. “The big job which the truth in fab- Me campaigners had before them 15 months ago was to knock out of the popular vocabulary the fraudulent term, ‘all wool,’ and to replace it by the term, ‘virgin wool.’ ‘All wool’ Taeons either new wool or it means shoday—old) r: re-worked in some cases as often as cight times. No buyer can tell which it mean: specified time. straight from the sheep's bac nothing else. substitution terms has been achieved to a remark- able degree, largely thru the generous aid of the newspapers and periodicals. “The demand for virgin wool gar- ments is already having a marked effect in textile manufacturing cir- cles; even tho the textile manufactur- ers are still mainly antagonistic and are fighting tooth and nail to stave off truth in fabric legislation. To our foes, the national sheep and wool bureau of America, as the leader of the truth in fabric movement, giyes this warning: Until a national truth in fabric law is enacted, there will be no let-up in the fight for such legis- lation either in congress or in the state legislatures. You, tho only a few thousand strong, to conserve your own selfish financial interests are op- posing the interests of the nation's 110,000,000 clothing wearers. But these millions are becoming wide awake to the fact that, for 20 years, you have defrauded them by falsely designating your cloth and their pro- tests will increase until they compel the labeling of cloth.” ane SE Better roads Now delivery of cream encouraging the dairy to the factory, business.
