b 1 2 1 AUAL DATE FOR LIQUOR AGENTS NOT YET FINAL Judge Raymond Reverses Decision , Regarding Plans for Bring- ing Alleged Slayers into Court CHEYENNE, Wyo., March 13.—The dates and places of the trials of Peter Cordillo and Walter Newell, charged with the. murder of Frank Jennings near Laramie September 7, 1919, have again become uncertain, as also has the date of the trial of John Cordillo, charged with the same crime, which is to be held in Cheyenne. Judge E. C. Raymond of Newcastle, who will preside at the trial of John Cordillo, and assumably at those of Peter Cordillo and Walter Newell, aft- er ¢isiting Cheyenne Thufsday unneunc- ed that the trial of John Cordillo would} not begin April 6, as he previously had decreed. The reason for his. change. of mind is that the county court room of the new city and county building, here will not be ready for use by April 6. Therefore the trial of the elder Cor.) dillo has been postponed until such time as the court room will be ready, which may not be until well into May. The county or counties in which the younger Cordillo and) Newell will be tried ,will be selected later ,as well as the dates on which their trials will be- gin. If little difficulty is experienced in securing a jury in this county for the trial of the elder Cordillo, this indi- cating little interest or prejudice here, it is probable that»one or both of the other defendants will go on trial here. Should. there be) difficulty in securing a jury for the trial of John Cordillo, however, it is anticipated that Judge Raymond will select another or two oth- er counties for the younger Cordillo and Newell trial: A jury list of 3,000 has béen prepared here and from this will be drawn -the veniremen for the trial of John Cor- dillo, EBERT SERVING FIRGT YEAR OF TERM AS. GHlEF (Continued from Page One.) Richtofen; minister of finance, Herr Schiffer; minister of postal and tele- graphs, Herr Geisbérg: ministers with- out portfolio, Dr. Mathias Erzberger; armistice commissioner, former state secretary and leader’ of the .Ceéentrist party; Edvard David, president of the National Assembly, and Herr Wissel. The Bbert government underwent many changes by reason of political, economic and popular demands. The. first real crisis to threaten the Ebert. regime, however, arose over the question. of accepting the peace treaty terms. Ebért, Scheidemann and other leaders were opposed to yielding to the entente demands. Scheidemann resignéd and a pro-treaty cabinet including Dr. August Mueller and ex-Labor Secretary Bauer, former Socialist member of the reichstag, was organized. Bauer in a speech" at Weimar before the National Assembly denounced the strong termg but announced.the govern- ment's decision to jsign. For weeks. before. the revolution broke out in Berlin there was a steady run on German banks. Ebert, then chancellor, had a conference in Berlin on. November 25,. 1918, with 70 dele- gates from. various parts of Germany, said; “Everything was in ruin when we took charge... Now, however, a Social: } istic republic hag, replaced the mon-/ archy and power.has been’ put in the hands of the workmen and soldiers." The first aim to be achieved, he said, * was peace and the security of an eco-| nomic basis. Liberty, he maintained, was worthless: without food, and employ- ment, and it was as a result of this con- ference that the National Assembly met last spring to devise a PATER AHES form of government. Meanwhile the provisional govern- | ment had been in an almost constant ‘ state of flux. Ministers came and went, Owing to scarcity of food, clothing and fuel, conditions In many parts of Ger- * many were” reported desperate and there Were many fumofs that soviet rovernment would supercede the Ebert regime. President Ebert had the backing of the Moderates of Germany almost from the beginning. One reagon for this was that when he succdeded Prince Maxt-. milian he ‘anhounced that property} sighte would be respected, that no banka would be seized and that the goy-/ ernment would uphold the Gernian war 5 losses and pay all claims on the state. The president iti a New Year mani- festo said that 1920 would décide whether Germany would maintain her- self ay a nation.’ A week later he was threatened by a mob in Stuttgart. On the preceding December 12. the Ebert cabinet’s\ fall was reported as likely as as a result of the allied demands over the Scapa Flow sinkings.
