(ta aaa Your Sacred Duty: LIBERTY Bonds. WAR PRORIBITION 6 MYTH, aaa EX-GOVERNOR CARLSON IN. TALK. AT WHEATLAND Declares War Will Be Ove Over before the National t= Amendment Becomes MUST VOTE DRY Effective; State Must Oust John Barleycorn in November “There will never be any war prohibition in the United States.” This was the declaration, or prediction, made by Ex-Goyernor Carlson of Colorado who addressed a temperance meeting in Wheatland this | week. Governor Carlson based his assertion upon the fact that war pro- | not take effect until next July, and | hibition as ordered by congress will the belief that before that time the| Stars and Stripes will float over the| city of Berlin and that the war will} have ended. As the act of congress makes prohibition effective only for | the period of the war, should the war| end as we hope and expect within the coming six months, then this pro- | hibitory act will be void and there will be no interference with the li-} quor traffic, nationally, until the| states shall have ratified the consti- tuional amendment. Hence it is up to the people of Wyoming who wish to banish the curse of rum from our Lorders to} keep up the fight to make the state dry and to elect.a dry governor and legislature who will ratify the nation- al constitutional amendment. Gov. Carlson made a most convinc- ing arguntent for state prohibition as| a business’ proposition and as an act of true patriotism. He quoted num- erous statistics showing the increase} of legitimate business in Colorado | asa direct result of prohibition in that state. He showed that banks have gained many thousands of de positors—people who formerly spent) their earnings for drink—that bank! deposits have increased by millions of dollars; that buildings formerly de- cupied by sa:oons are now homes of legitimate business at higher rents; that crimes and poverty are steadily decreasing despite bootlegging that is being carried on from C€ yenne and other Wyoming border ns. For several years Colorado has used her prison convicts for state} road work. Goy. Carlson ‘said that} one argument against prohibition during the campaign in that state was that convicts were needed for read work, and if prohibition went into effect there would be such 2 shortage of convicts that the road building industry would be seriously effected! And it was so. However,| the men who formerly built roads as convicts are now in many cases pay- ing taxes to help pay laboring men proper wages for road work. © Tourist business in Colorado has in- creased 125 per cent. under dry laws. Scores of saloon men have been driv- en into decent business and are thankful for the change. They are no longer living by driving women to wear out their lives over w | tubs and by taking milk from babies, | and many a bartender has sworn off his beer bloated belly and become a respectable shaped farmer—useful| citizens instead of parasites. He said that the low down riffraff of Colorado and the other dry states who will not be reformed have flock- ed to Wyoming in drov: and will vote this fall to keep Wyoming as the ¢ pool of the West and to drive decent people from the state. Licking Germany With a Clean Army Gov. Carlson paid a-high tribute to General Jack Pershing who has done so much to make the American ny sober, clean and healthful, and 1 that the reason that the kaiser’s hosts are now being driven bi utter defeat is because the ing fought by the cleanest army the work! has ever known—a sober ar- my. He emph 1 the duty of the Wyoming people to clean up the state and make it a ‘decent place for .our boys to come back to; that when the heroes of the world’s great fight for liberty come back to native land, many will be maimed and crippled and we shall need our resources to care for them. We shall not be able after the war to spend more than $2,000,000,000 per year over the kaiser’s bar—we shall need that money to care for our boys and for reconstruction work. The idea that the struggle against the saloon is over because of recent wartime legislation is purely booze propaganda. It is dangerous bec: it is apt to create a feeling of over- confidence and indiffere on the part of dry people. These are only temporary measures. The battle wi! not be won until it is won a prepon- derance of dry votes at the election ‘on Nov. 5th. > Money to loan on everything.
