Hen Hyde is the author of the article in question and he has remvuved it from the dry as dust class by his delightful method of writing. Nine years ago oil was struck on the Wabash river in th part of I}linois known as “Egypt.” / few years later Illinois was third in} the rank of oil producing states, with California and Oklahoma ahead. Now, these wells have fallen off fifty per cent, altho there are still thousands} of producing wells. It is said that} the farmers of the Egypt vicinity did! not mush out to spend their money when the oil made it flow in easily, but salted it down and dre educating| their familie tatious ense. They have succumbed to automobiles, nevertheless, after all, are necessities in of rapid living. But Now Fallen the Chicago sa long and living in unosten this day oie Lincoln County Oil Activity The oil boom in Lincoln county continues unabated, in spite of the inclement weathe Many prospect- ors are taking up claims in the vari- ous fields of this section and prow moters from afar slip in and out of the city each week, after prospecting in one ar more fields. Last week the state land board leased over 5000 acres of oi] lands in the LaBarge section to the ‘following: nk Bon of Cheyenne, Bernstein Brothers of Cheyenne, Joseph Bariana of Denver, R. T. Taylor of Casper and H. S. Rid gely, who represents the Cre us Gi] Company of Big Piney. According to terms of these leases, 8 wells must be sunk upon the land by the first of June. This would make 28 wells in prospect for the LaBarge section within the next few months, including 20 to be sunk by a large Kansas City Company which recently leased ex- tensive lands in that section. ae Prices on Oil Stock Goes Up As spring approaches and prospects are brighter, the price of oil stocks commence to creep up. shares of Elkhorn changed hands yes- terday at 52%. than the last price named for these popular stocks. H. E. Young, who is interested in the oi] game, is here from Glenrock. Elkhorn to Shoot Well Today A well on Section 4, Elkhorn lease in the Big Muddy Field, will be shot today if all plans carry well. The well is drilled to a depth of about 900 feet in the Shannon sand, and is ed to yield a good flow. The company is planning on a very deep well as soon as the weather will per- mit such drilling. F. E. Kistler of the Producers Oil} company of Texas, arrived last even- ing from Denver, The Producers are getting ready for extensive opera- tions in the spring when the weather opens up. W. D. Woolery, of the Ohio Oil company is in town today, having ar- rived from Basin. S. H. Keoughan, of the Keoughan Drilling company, is spend- ing the day in Casper on his way to Glenrock from a trip to Denver. Mrs. Keoughan and their little son are in camp with Mr. Keoughan out in the Muddy field. Hurst- Wm. Hjorth is so much improved that now he is clamouring to go to his home, and wants to turn his back on the hospital. The doctor promises to restore him to liberty in a few more days. H. B. Simcox of the Produters Oil company is among the arrivals from Denver on the tardy morning train yesterday which never arrived until nightfall. ° Arthur Johnson, auditor for the Midwest, arrived from Denver yester- day and his friends are enjoying his society during his brief stay. ‘ : i vail. jpensation of sheriffs for the board of which | Glenrock Pe-! troleum is quoted at 140 and some | That is a little higher} | (Continued from Page One) | ' members elected to the house, and,| ‘consequently, fairea to pass.
