Presley Erganbright, a clerk, was shot and killed in the yard of a public-school building here late last night. He had com- mitted suicide apparently, since the police described the finding of an automatic revolver near his body. McGrath was a member of K Yompany, Third Missouri Infan- try, that was ordered into Federal service Monday. The police de- clared today that McGrath and Erganbright had quarreled, the latter having called McGrath a “tin soldier.”’ Several persons witnessed last night’s tragedy. McGrath was in uniform when he killed himself. Two boys who said they saw him shoot himself declared he faced the river and lgave the military salute before pressing the revolver trigger. In one of his pockets was a brief note addressed to the captain of his company. It read: ‘*Have Bill Bateman blow taps over me, please.’’ Z Villa Raiders to Trial Soon. Santa Fe, N. The men were cap- tured in Mexico by United States STATE ASSESSMENT FOR 1917 TAXES I8 RAISED $50,490,258 Valuation of Farm Lands In. creased 10 Per Cent in Forty-One Counties. About Growing Beans. “Judging from the large number of requests for informa- tion about bean growing,’ says W. L, Nelson, assistant secretary of the Missouri State Board of Jefferson City, Mo., March 31. —Today marked the completion of the work of the State Board of Equalization in passing upon ‘the assessments of real and personal property for the taxes of 1917, as returned to the board by the county assessors, The board directed increases averaging 10 per cent in the valu- ation of farth lands in 41 of the 114 counties. Tn the faee of these the total of the assessments these classes of -prop State is out $19,122,1 the total of the returns made by the Assessors, This is due to the equalization of the value of bank stocks. In some of the counties the assessment of this class of property is fixed by the local As- sessor at $1, The board some years ago fixed the assessible value of bank stocks at 50 cents on the dollar. The Assessors returned a_ total value for all bank stocks in the State of 107,576,045, and the final value of 50 cents on the dol- lar applied by the board makes the total $68,792,329, The total value of the real and personal property of the State for the taxes of the current year is $1,756,433,871, this being an in- crease over the total valuation for 1916 of $50,490,258. The increase in the assessment of -land. over last year is $16,- 027,276, and in personal property of $3,634,145. Other items, such as increase in money, notes, bonds ete., make up the balance of the general increase. Ag usual nearly one-half of the entire valuation of the State for taxes is found in Jackson County and the Cityof St. Louis. The total of the former for the present year is $219,507,258 and of the latter $616,592,815. Neither the Jackson County nor the St. Louis assessments as fixed by the local assessors was changed. The board finds a discrepancy increases of the in the assessments of real estate}- owned by banks and trust com- panies of St. Louis which is val- ued by the owners at $22,860,039, and is returned in the assessments at $5,889,520. The board could not well in- crease this item without disturb- ing all of the real estate valuation in St. Louis, but adopted this res- olution offered by Attorney Gen- eral MeAllister: Resolved, That the attention of the Assessor and Board of Asses- sors of the City of St. Louis he called to the fact that, while the actual value of real estate be- longing to banks and trust com- panies of the City of St. Louis is $22,860,039, it is returned for as- sessment at the total value of 889,520, about 25 per cent of its actual value. Here are some of the counties that were increased by the State Board in valuation of farm land assessments : ' Buchanan, Harrison, Gentry, Saline, Carroll, Linn, Mercer, Boone, Callaway, Montgomery, Audrain, Ralls, Shelby, Knox, Scotland, Adair, Marion, Frank- lin, Moniteau, Henry, Vernon, Stone, Ozark, Texas, Shannon, Butler, Cape Girardeau, Ste. Gen- evieve, Osage and several others, 10 per cent over the figures of the County Assessors. i In the counties of Mississippi, Nodaway, Hickory, Taney, Pem- iscot, Madison and Phelps the Board. made an increase of 20 per cent in the valuation of farm lands. In Putnam County farm land valuations are ordered increased 25 percent, and in St. Louis County 5 per cent. In De Kalb and Livingston counties the as- sessments were decreased 10 per cent. In 31 counties the valuation of mules is increased from 10 to 50 per cent; in 46 counties there is an increase in the assessment of cattle ranging from 10 to 80 per cent. With the corporate assessments that including the property of railroad, telegraph and telephone, bridge and other public service corporations which the board will value next, and which will ag- gregate something over $200,000,- 000, the total taxable wealth of Missouri is expected this year to go beyond the two-billion-dollar mark for the first time in the his- tory of the State. ‘8. C.R I. Red eggs for hatch- ing, $1.00 for 15. < Mrs, J. F. Nicolay, aAgriculture,—‘many—farmers—are thinking of planting beans this season. The reason for this is’ that beans are now selling at ree- ord prices—$6 to $7 per bushel. These prices are due to the ex- port demand, resulting from the European War and to the heavy losses from excessive moisture and early frosts during the 1916 season. “The 1916 commerical bean crop of the United States amount- ed to 8,846,000 bushels, grown principally in Michigan, Califor- nia and New York, The average yield was 9.4 bushels, and the De- cember farm price was $5.06 per bushel, as compared with $2.26 two years previous. In Ontario where about three-quarters of a million bushels of beans are grown annually the yield for 32 years hag averaged 17 bushels, with $1.25 as the average price per bushel, ‘‘A bean disease, known as an- thraenose, which attacks pods, beans ‘and leaves, causing heavy losses. For this disease, some- times refered to as the ‘bean spot’, and which resembles apple or to- mato rot, there is no satisfactory cure. For this reason Missouri farmers, who plant to grow beans, should be careful to secure dis- ease-free seed. Anthracnose is transmitted thru the seed, thru washing ‘or brushing of the fungi from one plant to another, or it may he carried in the soil. “The bean plant, like all leg- umes, is a nitrogen gatherer or soil builder. The bean is also one of the most valuable articles of food. Beans may be grown in & variety of soils, but always the seed bed should be well prepared. Planting is in rows about 28 in- ches apart, an ordinary grain drill or a special bean planter be- ing used. In Michigan the small white bean-pea is most evtensive- ly grown. Marketing is mainly thru bean growers associations.’’ Auto Licenses Set Record. Jefferson City, Mo., March 31. —Today closed the biggest three months’ business ever done by the State Automobile Registration Department. in the office of Sec- retary of State Sullivan, All the business is chargeable to the cur- rent automobile year, which _be- gan February 1, but the applica- tions for registration for the year began pouring in carly in Janu- ary. In three months of January, February and March more auto- mobile licenses were issued and {more money taken in for them by Secretary Sullivan than for the entire registration year of 1916, The registration for the three months were: Chauffeurs, 7,- 214; transfers for owners, 286; extra and duplicate plates, 715; dealers, 1,075, and automobiles and all other motor vehicles, 104,- $98, making a total of 114,098, On this basis and following the normal rate of inerease of other years the total number of auto- mobiles owned in Missouri by the clgse of the present registration year should exceed 125,000. The total taken in for the regis- tration so far this year is $413,545 which, under the Hawes highway act, goes to the good roads fund of the State. All Kinds of Hardwood Lumber.
