There was not a house in the place of course, on.y a sign of @ house that Bruce Young | had built several years before the Civil war, At the time of our arrival and for three or four years thereafter, aside from the old state road from Pleasant Hill to Fort Scott, there were few roads at all, mostly old paths, many of which were made by wild animals across the country. I can remember very. distinctly of seeing deer roving over tue hilis in droves like cattle, wolves and wild hogs were very plenti- ful, and ‘when assaulted_were ferocious, I remember that in February of 1866 I went to what is ‘now the town of Butler. There was only one business house in the place, and it was conduct- by an old man by the name of Ben White, It was only a log house about 16 feet by 20. feet, the cracks chocked up with hay. The shelves consisted jof rough board stuck through the cracks from the side of the hut. Mr. White took all his goods off the shelves |every night and put them fn boxes for safety, There were more than a hun- dred old chimneys standing (in what had once been the town of Butler) on the town site. The only doctor in the whole coun- try was old Dr. Requa, who went far and near in his professional duties, After we came to Bates county and | during 1866 there were four men killed in the county between Butler and Stumptown as a result of war gruiges, two hung on the old Hamilton Elliott farm south of Butler.
