George Koetter and Adolph Hochmeister, two other convicted Hamburg-American officials, re- ceived the same sentence. Joseph Poppinghause, the fourth official found guilty, was sentenced to serve one year and one day in At- lanta. The Hamburg-American Line, also named as a- defendant, was fined the nominal sum of $1. William Rand, counsel for the defendants, immediately filed an application for a writ of error, upon which the case. will be ap- pealed to the United States Court of Appeals, * The convicted officials were re- leased on bail of $10,000 each, pending a hearing of their appeal. The bail was an increase of $5000 over the bond furnished for the appearance on the conspiracy charge. The writ of error acted automatically as a stay of execu- tion. The men were convicted as a re- sult of activities in dispatching 12 ships from New York to carry supplies to German raiders at sea and filling false manifests to cov- er the shipments in violation of the U.S. eustom laws. Although convicted on two counts, sentence was imposed only on one count of the indictments. = Judge Howe in passing sen- tence upon Buenz announced that he would recommend to the Gov-, ernment officials that he be ac- corded leniency should his physi- — cal infirmities endanger his life. Buenz is 72 years old. Judge Hemstreet Has Birthday. Tuesday was the 82nd birthday. of Judge W. F. Hemstreet and it found him enjoying much better health than is vouchsafed to most men of his years.
