To Clean Land of Cockelburs. | the field and noticed a good crop of| the land is well drained, harvest his'oatshe can get, at the same time ; cockleburs.’ An Iowa correspondent writes us to corn several seasons. In 1909, it was sown to oats, cloverand timothy. After the oats crop was removed noticeable stand of timothy, but plenty of cockleburs. It is a rented farm. would be of no use, that the burs would come in anyhow the next year, it was put in corn. ent naive.y remarks: “I went through Of course he did. He can, in his latitude, if|two-thirds of a seeding of the earliest drill, put in winter wheat, with a chance of growing a good crop if his land is rich ehough. He can then seed it heavily to clover and timothy; and when the wheat crop is removed he will have clover and cockleburs, deal of timothy, though he will not notice it until the next year. Now if he will clip back his clover as soon as the cockleburs come in blossom, he will do more to rid his land of cockle- burs than he could in many years’ cultivation of corn. Or if the the farm requires it, he can sow about entire corn crop, and, by using a disla seeding heavily to timothy and clover, and clip back as above described. The cocklebur can not make much \progress in a good stand of clover and timothy the second year. It will grow; but it is a late germinating plant, and by the time it appears it will be smothered out by by the rank growth of clover and timothy. It is possible to clean land of cockle- burs by growing it in corn; but it is exceedingly improbable that it will be done, for the reason that on a rented farm tenants can seldom be induced to put the labor onit in the way of hand pulling during July and August that is imperatively required. Hence the quickest and surest way is to sow it to some kind of small grain, seed heavily to the grass seeds, and then clip back when the cockleburs are in btoom; not before; and if afterwards, then rake up and burn. The first treatment of this land will not be a complete success, but the cocklebur will give no trouble as the land is full of grass plants. When it is again plowed up for corn there will be more or less cockleburs, but about two courses in this rotation will so clean up the land that they will give very trouble. We know that this can be done, because we have done it and so have hundreds of other men; but| Cla sa do not expect to get rid of cockle- burs on rented farms by grow-.” ing a corn crop, if it is neglected after it is laid by, furnishes exactly. the conditions in which the cocklebur de- lights: —Wallace’s Farmer.
