Nome, Alaska, June 17—The steamship Ohio, owned by the White Star Steamship company, struck {ce at Port Safety. A huge hole was broken in the ship’s bow and the vessel began to fill rapidly. A panic ensued among the passengers. Be- fore the lifeboats could be lowered more than seventy-five persons had jumped into the water. Two white men and a Chinaman were drowned. But for she effurts of the ship’s of- ficers in closing the bulkheads of two compartments, a disastrous loss of life would have resulted. When or- der had been restored among the passengers the Ohio backed off the ice and returned to Nome badly damaged. Too Heavy For the Horses. K. C. Star. Edward Howe, 4 driver for the Kan- sas City Transfer company, paid a fine of $45 in police court, because he tried to drive a team of horses up the hill at Second street and Grand ave- nue w.tha load which Judge Kyle held was too heavy. The load, in- cluding the wagon, weighed about 7,000 pounds. A representative of transfer company sald much heavier loads were frequently hauled. W.H. Nevada Post, While visiting the Jamestown ex- position last week a party of Ne- vadans were in great danger of los ing their lives by being drowned. They were on @ launch in Hamp- ton Roads. When about a mile from shore a severe storm came up sud- denly and tossed the waves over the launch, drenchingevery one on board Thefrail launch rocked like an acorn shell, being powerless among the angry waves. The launch started for one of the small ships, but {t was also rocking 80 badly that the sailors were afraid | to go to It. A French war vessel observed the | peril of the launch and its occupants. On nearing the French battleship, a passenger on thesteam launch threw & rope to the sailors of the war ves- sel and the little launch and {ts pre- cious load of human freight was saved, The passengers of the launch were kept aboard the French vessel for 3 or 4 hours, on account of the storm during which time they were royally treated. No doubt but what all on board the launch would have been capsized but for the fact that they were pull- ed aboard the French vessel. The Nevadans aboard the launch were Gen J.D, Ingram and daugh- ter Miss Louise, Col. J. R Walton and Mrs. Sue M. Bunce and daugh- ter Miss Sue Bunce. Other passen- gers on the launch were friends from St Louis and Marshall, Mo. Jews in a Riot in Cleveland. Cleveland, 0., June 17.—A riot oc- curred in the Jewish district as a re- sult of a ban placed upon the kosher meat shops. The Jews, angered over the recent raise of four cents a pound for meat refused to buy, and areurg- ings others not to buy. All of the kosher shops were picketed by the women and children of the neighbor- ‘hood. Delivery wagons were stop- ped, meat was soaked in coal oil and the shops were closed When Jacob Rockevitch emerged from ashop with meat he was sur- rounded hy women. Secures Order Restraining Rail- roads From Charging a3 Cent Fare in Missonri. St. Louis, June.—Attorney General Hadley sprang a coup on the lead- ing railroads in Missouri Friday by securing temporary restraining or- ders In the circuit court in St. Louis, enjotning the railroads from charg- ing a3cent passenger fare in the state, after the new 2 cent rate and maximum freight rate bill go into effect at midnight Friday. The tem- porary restraining order issued by Judge McPherson in thefrderal court in Kansas City last Thureday in which the state {fs restrained from enforcing the passenger and freight bill 1s in effect Friday only, accord- {ng to officials {n the local depart- ments of the general rallroad offices in St. Louis. Whether Judge McPherson willl continue his order in force after to- day’s hearing of the rate bill contro verey in the federal court in Kansas City is not known. Ifthe does, the federal court and the state court will have confilcted and the rallroad companies will be {n a quandry. Bunyard—McBurney. At the home of the bride’s parents in Amsterdam, Mo., on Wednesday, June 12, at 4 p. m., were united In marriage Benjamin F, Bunyard, ot| Kaneas City, Mo., and Miss Kather- ine L. McBurney, oldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. A. McBurney. The guests were assembled in the, parlor, {n one corner of which was! coustructed a bower of roses, ferns and evergreen, with a large white wedding bell suspended from the cen- ter under which the bride and groom stood, while the Rev. W. F. Baker pronounced the magic words, which made them man and wife. Thebride looked very sweet in a beautiful drees of white French organdie, trimmed in valencines lace and fusertion, and | carried a large boquet of bride’s roses n and white carnations. The groom wore the regulation business suit for afternoon dress. The bride 1s one of Bates county’s mostcharming young school marme, well and favorably known and will be missed from her corpse of teach- ers. The groom, an auditor for the Kansas Clty Southrn Rallway, for- merly lived at Merwin, Mo., and is well known in this vicinity. At 6 o’clock dinner was announced and all repaired to the dining room, which was prettily decorated in roses and banks of sweet honey suckle, where an elegant 4 course luncheon was served by the bride’s sisters, Misses Mayme, Bon and Ethel Me- Burney. In the center of the dining table was arranged a large heart constructed entirely of pansy blos- somes with the point toward the bride and groom.
