~ WEEKS FULLY EXONERAT Facts About the Reputed. Deficiency in County Treas- urer’s Office. Mr. Weeks Asked For an Investigation and Made Good the Shortage of Another. ED. a Court Certificate Shows “He Was Honorably Discharged and Carries With Him the Good Wishes of the Entire County.” The Old Story Dug Up in Malice and Circulated With Spite and Venom. “Weeks tpg og vot Ne mg 0" an lore hie ‘ime Dore the sberiff arrived here with a state warrant, him back to adjost a deficiency $2,318, as atated by the'sberiff, the foterview publiehed tn the Rich Hill Review, May 7, 1885, on file for ex- amination, which would morally and legally dieqvality him from any of- fice.”’—Rich Hill Enterprise, Oct, 12, 1906. The Enterprise had been indus triously intimating that some- thing was radically wrong with Mr. Weeks’ record, but had signal- ly failed to make a direct charge until this time, when he makes the above charges. The regular edition of his paper, of that date, eent out in the vicinity of Rich Hill, did not contain this article, headed “Our Reason Given,” in which the above charge was incorporated, but it was published in a special edition, on the fourth page, under a patent advertisement, and sent broad-cast over the north part of this county. Thesame space in the regularedition was occupled by plate matter and a poorly printed cut of the Kansas City Southern Railway. We make this statement to show how manifestly unfair Mr. Wiseman is in his methods and to what disreputable tactics he has stooped to defeat Mr. Weeks, af- ter his nomination. This can be at- tributed to Wiseman’s mortification and chagrin over his small vote and Weeks’ {mmense majority in their own home. Now, as to the full facts and truth about the charge, brought above, that there was a deficiency when Mr. Weeks was county treasurer. Jeffer- gon county, Georgia, was not alarge or wealthy county, and the treasurer’s office paid but a meager competence. Mr. Weeks was elected to that office, gave his bond, qualified and took charge. While supervising the con- duct of the office, he put a dep- uty in charge, while he continued to conduct his farm of 240 acres. He would make his own reports, and while at work on one of these discov- ered a shortage. He immediately went before the grand jury, which was in session at the time, and report- ed the seeming shortage and asked that a committee be. appointed to examine his books. In compliance with his request the Grand Jury ap- pointed a committee of three, to ex- amine the books of the office. A deficit of something like $2,000 was discovered. Mr, Weeks called his bondsmen together, ‘explained the eltuation to them, and further that he did not have the ready money to pay, bus offered to turn over hiefarm of 240 acres for that purpose, which was ample to fully indemulty. the “SraTe or GEorGia Jefferson County L,P.J. Mr. Weeke volunteered to go back without a requiettion, When he reached there, the balance of the bondemen and the court officers were greatly surprised, as there had been no proceedings against Mr. Weeke whatever. It ap- peared that Instead of the bondemen selling the farm, and applying the money, as they should have done, to the liquidation of the indebtedness, they attempted to form a stockcom pany and run the farm. They had fallen out over the management and one of them, in @ fit of anger, had sworn out a warrant for Mr. Weeks’ arrest. » The clerk of the circuit court at that time gave Mr. Weeks the follow- ing certificate: “State oF GEORGIA Jefferson County j I, P. J. Strat- ford, clerk superior court, Jefferson county, Ga., do certify that Mr. C.G. Weeks {s exonerated of all charges preferred against him in this court and that he has been honorably dis- charged and carries with him the good wishes of the entirecounty.
