Food Value of a Soda Cracker You have heard that some foods furnish fat, other foods make muscle, and still others are tissue building and heat forming. You know that most foods have one or more of these elements, but do you know that no food contains them all in such properly balanced proportions as a good soda pat The United States Government report shows that soda crackers contain less water, are richer in the muscle and fat elements, and have a much higher per cent of the tissue building and heat forming properties than any article of food made from flour. That is why Uneeda Biscuit should form an important part of every meal. They represent the superlative of the soda cracker, all their goodness and nourishment being brought from the oven to you in a package that is proof against air, moisture and dust—the price being too small to mention. Keakuk, La., Oct. 9.—The long dis- | pute as to who fired the shot that ) killed Gen. D.. in which he says: “| killed him, I was so close that I saw the powder blacken his face.”’ He positively denied killing Tom Custer. The confession was made to Mary C. Chicago.—“I don't believe in soap ing. Some people are better without. bathing, and I am sure too much bath ing is not good.” In these words Dr. Mary A. Sey- mour startled the Promotion of Health club with her repiy to Dr. Cornelia Claflin’s advice to take two baths a day with liberal use of soap. “We are not dirty enough,” declared Dr. James C. Price, who joined in the discussion. “The fact is, we are too clean, Children are not dirty enough. In my practice I have noticed that the greatest sickness and the largest number of fatal cases are among those who use soap and are over-particular about vathing. We ought to eat more mud and clay. The trouble with the present generation is that it doesn't eat its peck of dirt a year. “What is the use of these vacations spent in the country? The real bene- fit of a vacation in the country is that you eat sand and dirt. You go into the garden and eat the strawberry from the vine without stopping to brush the sand off it, You eat other fruitand vegeta- bles in the same way without taking them into the kitchen and washing and peeling them down uatil all of the dirt and husk is removed. “We must have all the hull taken from the wheat and nothing but the soft in- side left, The fact is our intestines are becoming nothing but flabby tubes, “Why are you so afraid of a litle good, wholesome dirt? You ate plenty of it when you were children, You dropped your bread and butter in the dust and didn’t even bother to brush it off before you ate it. “When the cerebro-spinal meningitis or some other disease begins to claim victims, what do the doctors do?) Why, slame it to the microbes, The microbes are getting abused, The doctors must have some scapegoat, They used to have the devil. But now, when they run up against something they don’t under- stand, they yell ‘microbes,’ In truth the little mocrobes are the best friends we have.” Soap found a valiant champion, how- ever, in Dr. Mary Donohue. She said: “In the tenements I have found children who had not been thoroughly washed with soap for two or three years. With much labor and liberal use of soap I was able to get the soil off only in spots. “I believe that such conditions will certainly give rise to epidemics. An epidemic might start any time in the tenements of the West or North side. We have had municipal ownership of streets and alleys for a long time, but what is the result? Our streets and alleys are so filthy that they would act as channels to convey disease all over the city if an epidemic were started. “I believe we ought to descend on the city council in a body and force it to im- prove conditions. I believe that cleaner streets, cleaner houses and cleaner peo- ple is the only safeguard.” Information Easily Obtained. A New York paper is discussing the question, “Do Boys Hate Bathing?” Light can be obtained on the subject by moving with the boys nearariver and giving them strict injunctions not to go near it. REMARRY AFTER 27 YEARS Broken Ends of Old Romance Reunited Through Efforts of Couple’s Chil- dren—No More Separation. Chicago.—Divorced 27 years ago, William A. Ross and Mrs, Rada Ross, of Lafayette, Ind., were remarried at the home of the bridegroom. Their first marriage took place in Lafayette and three children were born of the union. ‘the couple moved to Chicago, where troubles arose, and a divorce fol- lowed, after which Mrs. s.oss went baqk to her Indiana home, taking her three children, which the court had awarded her. For years she has been matron of the Woman’s Christian home in Lafayette. Mr. Ross married again and lived with his second wife 18 years. She died last winter. With her demise the children of the first marriage, now grown to manhood and womanhood, began overtures to effect a reconciliation between their father and mother. Arrangements for the remarriage of the couple were completed and the three children were present at the event which reunited the broken ends of the broken romance. “The trouble was that Rada was too good a woman for me,” said the bride- groom. “But it’s all right now, and only death will separate us again.” Egg of Captive Rattlesnake, One of a boxful of four rattlesnakes sent to Fred Krempel from California three or four days ago laidan egg re- cently, which is said to be almost with- out precedent, as, snakes in captivity never breed.
