After he bad been in the hospital a few days the spots entirely disappeared. The hospital physicians account for this strange development in this way: When the men are put under pressure in the caisson the blood is driven entirely away from the surface of the body and brain back to the regions of the heart. The arteries and veins become relaxed and collapse. At the same time a quan- tity of air is forced through the skin and finds lodgment in the tissues of the flesh itself. When the men ere taken from the caisson, unless they are decompressed very slowly, the system is unable to return to its normal condition before the outer air is reached. When this is the case the blood still remaining in the interior of the body rushes to the surface and tears along the veins with a flerce rush. The relaxed veins are subjected to a sudden strain and in some cases give way, causing the blood to come to the surface of the body in great clots, very much like blood blisters, The rush of blood is rendered the more dangerous by the effort of the imprisoned air to get free at the same time. This bas a tendency to pull the veins and ar- were fishing when their boat was up- set.
