Birmingham, Ala., Feb. 28.—One hundred and fifty two miners, some white and some colored, are entomb- ed in the coal mines of the Alabama steel and wire company, at Virginia mines, six miles south of Bessemer, and a large force of men isengaged in herolc efforts te rescue.them, but the odds are fearful and the chances seem against the entrapped miners. About 4 o’clock this afternoon an explosion occurred at the mine which brought down a great mass of timbers, slate, coal and earth near the entrance, completely closing up the mine and shutting out its in mates from the world. The explos- fon was the result of whatis known in mining vernacular as a “dry shot.” A large force of men was organized and equipped with tools, and the work of opening the entrance to the mine began, but it wae plainly evi- dent that the task was a gigantic one. . Jefferson, City,Mo , February 27— Representative Crowther of Barton county is preparing an educational bill, which he expects to have ready for introduction Tuesday. 1¢ pro vides for state aid to high and rural schools, the amount to be given to be reguluted by the amount of tax the schools so aided vote for their own malntenonce. A district which votes upon itself a tax of 80 cents on the $100 will re- ceive $400 from the state for each school term; on a 90 cent tax the state is to pay $500; and on a tax of $1 or over the state is to give $600. Rural schools, which can not levy a sufficient amount to run an eight month's term, are to receive such aid from the state as will enable them to continue a sufficient period over the term for which their levy provides, to extend the term to tight months. Jefferson City, Mo., Feb. 29 —This afternoon Governor Folk returned to the House with his approval the bill introduced by Drunert of Mont gomery, providing that a two thirds vote of those voting on the propo sition shall be sufficient for the re- moval of a county seat.
