He has an intimate knowledge not only of the original English, and of the splendid German translation, but of the acting edition as well. Barnay, the great Bavarian actor and theater director, tells this story in| his recent book of reminiscences: | “On one occasion, on which ‘Rich- ard II.’ was performed at the Berlin Theater Royal, in the presence of the emperor, the latter sent for Herr Bar- May at the close of the performance and said to him “During the performance, Herr ®Barnay, four lines were said which are not to be found in the original Shake- speare." “‘It is true,’ returned the director. ‘They are an interpolation by Dingel- BStaedt (a commentator) to obtain Greater clearness.’ “The emperor frowned, and said: future, Herr Director, see that avoid such mutilation. We are play tricks with Shakespeare. A better story is about “Much Ado About Nothing.” The emperor was listening to Fraulein Poppe as Beatrice declaiming the beautiful speech begin- ning, “What fire is in mine eyes.” “That's all wrong,” exclaimed his majesty, turning to the empress, “We'll have Poppe up here after the performance, and I'll tell her how it must be done.” And after the per- formance he recited the detightful lit- tle speech, and Poppe said it could not be done better, GIRLS ARE Too FRIVOLOUS. you not to London Critle Makes Accusntions Against Young Women of Modern Society, A new crime is charged against the modern society girl Ss that she en- ters into matrimon engagements with levity and breaks them with equal lightness of heart, A sober- minded British contemporary draws comparisons between the present day methods and the time when a betroth- al was as serious an affair mar- riage itself. Now, it is not an unusnal thing for a girl to be engaged sev- eral times before she is married, but people think none the worse of her for that. “An engagement,” this authority continues, as become no more of a weighty matter now than a dance. A woman can throw her partner over if she likes. When girls are capri- cious, how can a man have the same feeling for the sanctity of marriage when he knows well that the girl whose hard heart he has ashed for has been engaged before and already has gone all through the intimacy of love making and the kissing entailed by it. “I heard the other day,” adds the as so writer, “of two marriages where the parties had been engaged from six to eight years. Everybo expressed un- bounded surprise that t! remained faithful so long. The fact is girls’ ways are beginning to r those nursemaids who walk out with aman, but not always with a view to ma y. Towa City, Ia., Feb 7—After fifty years of successful operation, the fa- mons Amana eocialistic society in lowa county faces a serious prospect of dissolution. It has lasted longer and been more than materially suc- cessful than any other socialistic community ever formed in America, From an Initial membership of about 100, with a meager property, it has grown to 1,200 and over $3,000,000 in property. Thesociety iscompoeed of Mennonites, similar to the Quakera, They own most of the land in three townshipsand have seven towns and villages, and are model farmera, Thes ciety operates the largest woolen mills in Lowa, turning out a product that isfamous all over the country. Everything is held in common and the by-laws pro vide that a withdrawing member may be given a certain small amount for every year he has been a member. The accumulation of property bas grown to such a point that a distri butfon would net about $6000 to each member while the average with drawal apportionment is only about $800. Some of the younger mem bers who want to withdraw but do not want tu pay so heavy a price, are supposed to back the dissolution proceedings which have been started in the district court. They allege that the society, organizei purely for benevolent and charitable pur poses, has exceeded its charter pow- ers‘and demand its dissolution and the division of the property.
